About the Founder:

I am a nurse living in the Wausau area with my husband and two fluffy, miniature American Eskimo pups. I graduated from UWSP several years ago with a BS Business Administration and BS Economics. I am also a nursing graduate of NTC and the University of Phoenix. I hold a strong volunteer presence in my community and established Gluten Free Wausau. My hobbies include: genealogy, running, strength training, road biking, softball, bonfires, volleyball, dog parks with my pup, cooking, hiking, swimming, music, volunteering, Badger and Packer games, and playing board games with my family and friends. I am determined to improve the quality of life for everyone that suffers from any form of gluten intolerance or is affected by someone who does. My Celiac Story:

In March 2009, I was finally diagnosed with Celiac Disease and other intolerances after years of tests, lab work, and unknowns. After struggling for several years with fatigue, nausea, stomach aches, vitamin deficiencies, GI problems, miscarriages, migraines, ice pick headaches, weight loss, and paresthesia (numbness/tingling) in my hands, face and feet, I was finally diagnosed via intestinal biopsy. Other lab results included extremely low levels of lactase, sucrase, glucoamylase, and palatanse enzymes, which were indicative of intolerances such as lactose and sucrose intolerance. I knew nothing about celiac disease and no idea how much of a struggle the next several years of my life would be. I thought, ok… just diet changes and I will be on the road to feeling better soon. Not so easy…

The ups and downs of my journey, that I still continue on today and for the rest of my life, are the very reasons why I created Gluten Free Wausau. Those moments of sitting down to eat with my family and friends… fearful, hesitant, skeptical, and not ordering anything except a glass of water for fear I would become ill if I dared to order even a salad without dressing off their glutinous menu. I would often wonder “How long will it be before I start feeling ill? Did they change their gloves prior to making my salad to ensure it wasn’t cross-contaminated? Were they in a hurry and forgot I ordered no croutons, only to take them off prior to bringing out my salad?” These questions and feelings are just the tip of the iceberg for me and many others out there. Then there are those nights when I would get home only to presume I have been glutened as I sit back on my heels, hovering my head over the bucket. Knowing that it will be what feels like light years away before I feel like I can say those days are not likely… I want to bring awareness to my family, friends, and community. Bonus: it’s in Long Grove, a beautiful little Christmas village not in the City (Probably closer to Wisconsin than Chicago, with cobblestone lined walkways, picturesque historic landmarks like the covered bridge, and boutique shops, and stop at the Long Grove Confectionery Company). Now sugar is being recalled due to "potential wheat kernel contamination."
The FDA page says "Press Release Not Issued For This Recall" 😡

The recall includes certain light brown and powdered sugar products sold under the United, Good & Gather (TARGET) and Crystal Sugar brand names. Sold in IA, IL, IN, KS, MN, OH PA, TX
