Vidya Dhan promotes the education of children, mainly girls from poor families in India. All donations go towards payment of school fees, books etc

About Vidya Dhan
Vidya Dhan (the name means “gift of education”) is a small charity set up by family and friends, it has been in operation since 2012. We are a registered charity subject to UK tax and company law and can claim the benefit of Gift Aid. Vidya Dhan's main area of operation is in India where it helps children, especially but not exclusively, girls from poor families. Its main objectives are:-
1) Contribute fully or in part towards the school fees of children
2) Contribute fully or in part towards costs of school uniforms, shoes and stationery
3) Reimburse children's medical costs if parents are unable to afford such costs
4) Counsel parents in order to provide a safe and nurturing home environment
5) Provide after-school tuition and help with homework where necessary
Vidya Dhan has been fortunate to recruit two voluntary outreach workers in India who select children in need. At present, the charity operates in and around Bangalore. As the presence of Vidya Dhan has become known the local villagers approach our outreach workers to obtain funding for their children's education. In addition, the outreach workers visit local villages to seek out children from particularly poor families. No preference is given to children on basis of religion or caste. Once children are enrolled into our programme, we monitor their progress at school and provide them and their parents with assistance as required. Children have benefitted greatly from our programme. These children would not have been able to afford even basic state education whereas they are now being educated in good English medium schools. At present there are 55 children, mostly girls, in our programme.

Lavanya, a very hardworking young lady who has been with Vidya Dhan since Year 7, is now studying at university to become a nurse.

She has written this beautiful and heartfelt message expressing her gratitude and appreciation towards Vidya Dhan. In her letter, she has also personally thanked some of the trustees and volunteers who have supported and encouraged her throughout her journey.

It gives us immense pleasure and pride to read her lovely words. We are truly inspired by her dedication and achievements, and we wish her every success for the future.

At Vidya Dhan, our commitment extends beyond preparing students for their academic futures; we also cultivate lasting friendships and unity among students living in the same locality.
A hallmark of our community is the way older students often lend a helping hand to younger peers.

Maria and Shwetha: A Story of Friendship

One such example can be seen in the relationship between Maria and Shwetha. Maria, who completed her master's degree last year, is now employed at the same college where Shwetha is pursuing her studies in Pharmacy.
For the past five years, both Maria and Shwetha have participated in weekly online English classes every Sunday, led by our volunteer, Jatinder. These sessions have not only enhanced their language skills but also provided them with a nurturing and joyful learning environment.
Through these classes, Maria and Shwetha have developed a deep friendship that has grown into a sisterly bond. Their connection has enabled them to support each other through life's challenges, always standing by one another in times of need.
So, it was no surprise when Shwetha shared how Maria helps her every morning by picking her up on her scooter. This act of kindness saves Shwetha from a long walk along a dirt road and a wait for the bus, illustrating the spirit of care and cooperation that our students embrace.
We are proud to witness the Vidya Dhan ethos of helping one another brought to life by our students, reinforcing the importance of compassion and solidarity within our learning community.

We are proud to share the inspiring work of Lakshmi, one of the students supported through Vidya Dhan Charity. 🌟

Lakshmi is currently studying nursing and despite her busy academic schedule, she is deeply committed to serving her community. She has been actively involved in social work alongside Father George in slum areas of Bengaluru, where she dedicates her time to helping those who need support the most.

Lakshmi regularly visits slum communities to raise awareness on important issues, particularly focusing on drug awareness among young people. Through her outreach, she helps educate youth about the dangers of substance abuse and encourages them to make healthier choices for their future.

We are incredibly proud to support students like Lakshmi, who are not only pursuing their education but also giving back and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made towards gender equality and to celebrate the achievements of women and girls around the world. Vidya Dhan is dedicated to this cause by focusing on education and empowerment in rural India.

We strive to provide quality education to girls in rural communities, believing that knowledge and skills are the key to unlocking their potential. By educating over 80 girls, we are taking significant steps towards breaking the cycle of poverty and dependence.

𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬

Through our efforts, more than 80 girls have gained access to educational opportunities that were previously unavailable to them. This education is designed not only to broaden their horizons but also to equip them with the tools needed to become financially independent. Empowering these girls is at the heart of what we do, and their achievements stand as a testament to the impact of our work.

We’re delighted to share some fantastic news! 🌟

Last year, Pritpal, one of our trustees, participated in her company’s annual Community Service Award programme, organised by McCormick Plc. This initiative recognises employees who go above and beyond to make a meaningful difference in their communities.

Out of 200 applicants, Pritpal was selected as one of just five finalists — an incredible achievement! 👏 This recognition reflects the dedication, compassion, and impact of her community work, including her ongoing support of Vidya Dhan.

Each finalist received $5,000 to donate to a charity of their choice, and we are deeply grateful that Pritpal chose to direct her award to Vidya Dhan. This will help us continue transforming lives through education and opportunity.

🌟 Success Story: Rohit’s Journey with Toyota

Rohit, one of the bright students from Vidya Dhan, began his apprenticeship at Toyota just over three years ago.

Out of a pool of 2,500 boys from lower-income families, Rohit was among the 55 candidates chosen for this prestigious program.

Through passion, perseverance, and consistent hard work, Rohit excelled during his apprenticeship.

In recognition of his outstanding dedication and performance, Toyota has now offered Rohit a permanent position with an excellent salary package.

We wish Rohit all the very best as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in his career!

Singing to Sweet Success

On 10th October, the ladies got thoroughly entertained by the amazing Dolly Brar who sang Bollywood, traditional wedding and Punjabi folk songs. There was some amazing food catered by Valora.

We had over 100 attend and we raised £1,517 from the event. What an amazing achievement!!!

All the ladies were in their element having a mazedaar afternoon, including a 92 year 'young' lady. We had some great feedback from a lot of people.

✨ A Heartwarming Visit in Nanded! ✨

In March, two of our generous Vidya Dhan donors visited the school in Nanded where the two girls they are sponsoring study. They had the chance to meet the girls in person, share gifts, and spend some meaningful time together.

Moments like these remind us how powerful and personal the gift of education can be. 💛
