Even when the sun shines, grief can be the long shadow cast. Our ED is attending Bonnaroo this weekend - and when a Reddit post appeared for Roovians to share their grief stories, guilt, and reservations about experiencing joy while also carrying grief - she jumped in.

If you or someone you know is attending: Saturday at 2pm, please join each other at The Grove for held space, conversation, and a little extra love. Bring your questions about home funerals, holistic deathcare, and anything else as well!

Alexis had this to say:
“When we find grief in the wild, we dont leave it unloved. Unseen. Unsupported. When people are brave enough to make themselves vulnerable, we are called to stand and support them in that moment - even if its in the middle of music festival. Thats the work”

It's Spotlight Sunday, and we want to introduce you to one of our beloved *DIRECTORY* members!

📍Kristen P. Patterson, Sacred Journey Death Doula
📍Arlington, DMV, & N. Virginia, Online

Kristen P. Patterson became a certified death doula and end-of-life planner before launching Sacred Journey Death Doula. Accompanying her grandmother and a family friend along their final journeys is what led her down that path.

Before that, she had spent over 25 years working in the international development sector focusing on climate change, public health, and environmental conservation. Much of her work was in African countries, serving with the Peace Corps, living and working in Niger, West Africa, and Madagascar, and she brings the understanding gained from working with other cultures into her death doula work.

Through Sacred Journey, Kristen's core values are connection, compassion, reverence, and joy. She holistically supports individuals, families, and caregivers with dignity through the emotional, spiritual, and logistical aspects of end-of-life transitions. She provides opportunities for open, honest conversations and discernment about mortality so that people can live fuller, more meaningful lives.

One unique thing that Sacred Journey offers is seasonal Demystify Death Nature Walks at a local park where attendees connect the seasons of nature with the seasons of our lives, grief, and mortality.

Kristen’s work as a death doula and her advocacy for individuals to explore their mortality so they can make informed choices that align with their cultural values around end-of-life decisions aligns with the Home Funeral Alliance’s Mission.

It's Spotlight Sunday, and we want to introduce you to one of our beloved *DIRECTORY* members!

📍Benjamin Martin, Natural Transitions Institute
📍Boulder, CO & Nationwide

Benjamin Martin is a Certified Life-Cycle Celebrant®, a published author, a Learning Facilitator, and the Executive Director of Natural Transitions Institute.

National Transitions (NTI) was founded in 2003 by Faith Davis, Shanti Green, and Karen van Vuuren to support families in caring for their own dead, and to bring ceremony and ritual into the home. We want to send a special heartfelt shout out to Karen, one of the original co-founders of Home Funeral Alliance.

For over 20 years, NTI has worked to forge the path for the evolution of the death doula movement and the expansion of green funeral provisions in the US. NTI publishes the Natural Transitions Magazine, organizes workshops and national conferences on natural death care, sponsors two film festivals, and has co-founded The Natural Funeral.

National Transitions Institute was formed to support deathcare professionals and funeral ceremonialists in creating personalized ways to honor life and death. It represents the best of two former organizations (The Celebrant Foundation & Institute and Life-Cyle Celebrants™), now as one unified platform.

Over 2,000 graduates have embarked on practice dedicated to serving both individuals and communities with empathy and sensitivity to all cultural and spiritual traditions and inclusivity of persons of all gender identifications.

National Transitions Institute’s mission to support conscious and holistic approaches to end-of-life through leading-edge educational offerings and resources, and so many other initiatives are why their work aligns deeply with the mission of Home Funeral Alliance.

📍Jo Von Ogygia-Onile
📍Salt Lake City, UT & Virtual

Jo Von Ogygia-Onile is a Soul Midwife with a specialization in Ancestral & Inner Child Healing, and Grief & Death Support (Spiritual & Physical).

Through Moonlit Midwives LLC, a holistic & community practice specializing in supporting beings and families through all of life's transitions, rebirths, and the final transition, Jo Von offers care that centers the unique needs of each individual, with all of their nuances, unique qualities, and interesting characteristics.

Jo Von’s journey into “Soul Midwifery” deathcare started in 2015 after taking care of their late father for the last year of his life, after a terminal diagnosis and rapid decline.

They worked as Chef Instructor, Alchemist, and Reiki Master for many years until they suffered a life-threatening injury due to hospital negligence that required two years of intense physical therapy to regain physical independence, which led to battling multiple chronic illnesses.

When Western medicine failed Jo Von again and again, they began studying herbalism. Since then, they have been able to heal and slowly bring balance back into their lives.

Jo Von uses their personal knowledge and experience to help clients honor their own healing also. Educating and supporting others during and after transition is why their work aligns with the mission of Home Funeral Alliance.
