Here's a story that will someday be in my book, "Dumb Things Beth Did As A Rehabber Before She Totally Lost Her Mind in Late 2026 or 2027 or Around There." This popped up in memories on my personal timeline today.

JUNE 2018:

Early this morning, Andrew comes into our bedroom and wakes me up by saying, “Daaahhhhhling, there’s a baby opossum in the dog room and it’s rather tame.” I immediately jumped out of bed and barely avoided stepping on an opossum sitting on my body pillow, which had fallen on the floor during the night. I ran to the bathroom and as I was, um, going, I heard a little sneeze, and found another opossum in the bathroom trash can. That left only 2 babies to locate, as I originally had 5. We ended up finding them in Andrew’s boots, with help from our curious cats.

So now I know not to put baby opossums in a rabbit cage ever again, because apparently even at the size of a small kitten, they can squeeze through one inch wide gaps.

Pstella ate well last night, her color is better today, and her wound doesn't reek anymore. BUT she now has swelling under her lower jaw, which may be an abscess. Hopefully the antibiotics will take care of that as well.

As long as her infected wounds don't end up being resistant to antibiotics, I'm hoping she can be released in a couple of weeks.

This old girl has had a rough way to go. She has already had joeys (her pouch is empty but ni***es are still prominent) and is only 3.5 lbs. She's pale, weak, emaciated and has a really gnarly, infected wound on her neck.

She's had a bath, two meds for pain, fluids, and a strong antibiotic and is resting comfortably.

Welcome Pstella, named by her finder Amanda who said, "Pstella doesn't begin with a P, but neither does opossum." Thanks for taking such good care of her, Amanda!

Volume up.

It's like Thunderdome in there, except with precious, chirpy baby skunks.

HEY EVERYONE! Once again, my content isn't getting much traction, so if you could comment, I'd be grateful.

I think the favorite part of my (non paying ) job is when I'm just hanging out in my facility room, maybe feeding a baby or cleaning or answering a helpline call, and I happen to look over and see something so beautiful and touching, and I feel so blessed and privileged to be able to do wildlife rescue. It is extremely hard, dirty, heartbreaking, sleep depriving work, but it's moments like this one that keep me going.

Anna has two new babies! This is the little female.

Raccoons are a labor intensive rehab, and there are nowhere near enough rehabbers to meet the demand in Ohio (and that's likely the case everywhere else, too).

If you see a baby outside exploring , please don't automatically assume it's an orphan. Please also don't assume that the deceased adult raccoon you saw two streets over is the mama of any baby you see by itself or with siblings.

Human intervention is the biggest problem rehabbers face. Let's all try to be mindful and not create orphans!

Thanks to Addy, Katie and Tara for calling us, following our simple request to send a photo and the location of the animals that needed help AND transporting them to me.

Do you know how often people do all 3 of these things? Well, I don't actually know but what I can tell you is it's not anywhere near often enough!

Now to hydrate these little nuggets!

The skunks are very picky and really only want to eat protein, but a high protein diet that isn't balanced with plant matter isn't great for any of our babies. Last night they had whole ground rabbit (from ) with broccoli very finely chopped and mixed in, as well as diced summer squash. This morning the summer squash was uneaten but the broccoli was gone.

So I'm trying summer squash mixed with scrambled eggs (their favorite!) this morning. I'm hoping they won't even know it's there!

This beautiful cottontail was hit by a car on Friday night and arrived to me at 5 pm today. It's left leg is dangling and I'm sure it has been a long 48 hours with no pain meds.

I've sent a video to my vet and she thinks the bunny would survive amputation surgery but is not currently practicing, so I'll be calling some of the vets we work with tomorrow to see if we can get the leg surgically repaired or amputated. I'll update when I have more info. For now, this bunny is eating and active in spite of an awful injury, which is a hopeful sign.

Always call a rehabber the day you find sick, injured or orphaned wildlife. No animal should have to suffer without pain management. Even when we can't save the animal, most rehabbers are equipped to manage pain and keep an animal comfortable.
