The European Rohingya Council (ERC) Welcomes Newly Arrived Rohingya Students in Türkiye

The European Rohingya Council (ERC) held an orientation and introduction session to welcome newly arrived Rohingya students in Türkiye under the Government of Türkiye’s scholarship program. The event was graced by the presence of the ERC Chairperson, General Secretary, and the ERC Education Team.

During the session, the Chairperson congratulated the students and emphasized the vital role of education in the empowerment and progress of the Rohingya community. He reaffirmed the ERC’s full support for their academic journey and its continued assistance throughout their stay in Türkiye.

Senior Rohingya students currently studying in Türkiye also shared their experiences, offered guidance, and expressed their commitment to helping the new students adapt to their academic and social environment.

The Chairperson underlined that education is the backbone of every society, yet the Rohingya have long faced severe discrimination in access to education. Even students with outstanding merit in Myanmar were systematically denied opportunities to pursue higher education for decades. Following the Arakan Army’s takeover of most parts of Arakan, educational institutions in the region have collapsed entirely.

Today, with more than 90% of Rohingya living outside their homeland, most of them in refugee camps in Bangladesh, it is imperative to find educational opportunities for Rohingya youth wherever they are. The ERC will continue working closely with YTB (Türkiye Scholarships) and other partners to explore pathways for more deserving Rohingya students to study in Türkiye.
