Look at what we found in the Creek! 🔦🐟

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Creek for Critters After Dark on Friday! We had a wonderful time introducing residents to the many animals who call Newtown Creek home. Keep an eye out for the Creek Cart as it continues its journey around the watershed.

Critters featured include: American eel, oyster toadfish, jellyfish, grass shrimp, mummichogs, eastern mud snails, and crabs!

And a very special thank you to Wild Resonance for giving us an inside listen to oyster toadish croaks and the audio soundscape of Newtown Creek! Please check out their incredible podcast all about the beautiful and wonder in the sounds of the natural world.

🚨 Wildlife Alert 🚨

Over the weekend Joseph Hach captured this amazing video of a school of rays swimming in Newtown Creek.

Species wise they look like cownose rays, which are native to the area and feed primarily on crustaceans and shellfish — guess they heard about some of our mussel restoration projects :)

Fun fact: a group of rays is called a fever. It is definitely the first we have seen in/around Newtown Creek.

Meet the Creek Cart! 🚲🐟

This summer, NCA staff and our TIDALS Fellows refurbished an old cargo bike, transforming it into a mobile environmental education station.

Newtown Creek is often difficult to get to, and it’s even harder to spot the critters who live in it. The Cart brings the Creek to neighborhoods around the watershed. Starting this month, you’ll spot the Creek Cart popping up at parks in Brooklyn and Queens, like McGolrick Park and the Oval at Hunter’s Point South Park.
You can find the Cart at NCA events this summer — starting tomorrow at Critters After Dark at the Queens Landing Boathouse in LIC! Then in Greenpoint for the Kingsland Wildflowers Festival on August 1 and the TIDALS Fellowship Wrap-Up & Research Shareout on August 13. Come say hi and meet your underwater neighbors! 🦀

Last-Mile Facilities are popping up across NYC and creating significant environmental harms.

As e-commerce continues to grow, neighborhoods around Newtown Creek are bearing the brunt of unregulated last-mile warehouses. These facilities have an outsized impact on air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and noise pollution compared to traditional warehouses due to higher volumes of product flow, larger square footage needed to house inventory, and 24/7 operations.

NCA is a proud member of the Last-Mile Coalition, working to directly address the environmental justice harms that stem from the unregulated rapid expansion of these mega facilities.

Fish Trap Check! 🐟

This summer, our TIDALS fellows are running a general fish survey on the creek, checking traps weekly, and recording what they find.

🚨🚨 Important Water Quality Meeting Next Week!

NYS DEC has announced a draft reclassification of water quality standards for Newtown Creek. This process may lead to actual environmental improvements, or just higher standards in name alone with carved out exemptions that allow for sewage overflow for decades to come.

This upcoming public meeting will allow community members the opportunity to ask questions directly to the State and City about this classification process and advocate for a cleaner sewage-free Creek in the future.

Join us:
