“I was a very reluctant soldier, I didn’t want to be in the battlefield at all, I thought I would be doing admin duties because of my age, but suddenly they needed an extra five men… you just had to go and do it.”
D-Day veteran Joe Mines landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944, and was immediately set to work clearing mines – he was still a teenager at the time. 80 years later, Joe volunteers for the Royal British Legion, looks after his family, and enjoys occasional trips to the dog track and his local pub.
Joe raises around £2,000 each year for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal and says: “I am very proud to collect for the Poppy Appeal every year with my daughter Sheron… and I really enjoy it.”
