CHILD is an indigenous organization legally mandated to execute projects aimed at uplifting the welfare of people that are faced with challenges of accessing the basics of life and also delineated from the enjoyment of the universally guaranteed human rights in Uganda

CHILD exists to find solutions to the socioeconomic difficulties that women and girls find themselves in. Since 2011, CHILD has spearheaded grassroots initiatives aimed at uplifting the status of women and girls that are often excluded from the reach of basic social services. CHILD has put greater emphasis on health and education

Organizational Goals and Commitments:

To address the challenges women and girl-children face in managing water in the domestic domain;
To increase gender equity and seeks to address the discriminative practices inhibiting Women’s potential in economic production in the community. To support the rural women into self reliance through participatory economic activities that lead to improved incomes such as agricultural improvement and credit schemes;
To advocate for the rights of women and children especially the girl-child;
To contribute to the overall community development through mainstreaming cross-cutting issues related to gender, children, HIV/AIDS, water hygiene and sanitation and Environmental issues;

Methodology:

CHILD deploys rights based approaches in implementing all its projects ultimately promoting gender equality and equity. CHILD mobilizes women and organizes them into groups. After organizing women into groups, CHILD conducts a needs assessment and planning with the individual women groups. The women are involved throughout the project process from conception through implementation. This has acted to increase sense of ownership and confidence among the women members of the various groups. CHILD trusts that the local women are empowered with knowledge about the socioeconomic problems and challenges they face, what the causes are and are also able to suggest possible interventions. CHILD opts to adopt a holistic approach to women’s problems at household level through interventions aimed at addressing the water sanitation and hygiene challenges. Water is very critical in the life of a woman at the household and its shortage has a strong bearing on the sustainability of other core components like food security, nutrition, early childhood development and income security

Why Women and girls? Around the world, women face some of the greatest obstacles yet also represent tremendous opportunity for lasting social and economic development. Globally, women face the following challenges:

They bear a disproportionate burden of the world’s poverty (They represent 70 percent of the world’s poor)
Their ability to have a decent life is limited (they perform 66 percent of the world’s work and produce 50 percent of the food but they only earn 10 percent of the income and own 1 percent of the property)
Investment in women is inadequate (recent data shows that only 3.6% of overseas development assistance was earmarked for gender equality (UNIFEM). And for every dollar of development assistance, two cents goes to girls (Girl Effect). Women are particularly vulnerable to violence and exploitation (About 70% of casualties in recent conflicts are women and children (UNIFEM) and the forms of violence they experience include torture, r**e, sexual slavery, enforced prostitution and mutilation (UN).

WASTE PAPER BEAD JEWELERY
CHILD engages girls in making paper bead jewelery from waste paper, fibre table mats, African bags, photo frames and all other forms of art as the client may wish. The project aims at supporting girls access to education by affording the poor girls school fees and scholastic materials such as books, pens, shoes, school bags and sanitary towels. Poverty has had negative consequences on the girls' access to education and this coupled with the patriarchal society norms, has perpetuated the inhibition of girls enjoying equal rights to education just like their male counterparts.CHILD aims at enhancing the enrollment and retention of girls in schools.

BIO-SAND WATER FILTERS
Considering that water is a very big challenge to the people of Nakaseke, CHILD has intervened by making BioSand filters that are simple technologies that are appropriate as a Point of Use treatment option.The filters are efficient in removing bacteria, protozoa and some virus like Cryptosporidium which is a very resilient and resistant virus that sustains diarrheal occurrences especially in people living with HIV/AIDS. The filters will help people living with HIV/AIDS, school children and health centres. For USD60, a filter is afforded to a household of 8 persons, provide drinking water to 75 pupils/students for a day. Once acquired, it is a long lasting asset that stays for 20-30 years with little maintenance, does not need electricity, produced with locally available materials.
FUEL BRIQUETTES
Human activities are having a heavy toll on the climate and this is having adverse consequences on people's livelihoods. Indiscriminate cutting of tree for fuel cooking energy and other purposes, has left huge tracts of land bare.
Women as the ones bearing the brunt of collecting firewood are hugely affected because there is general scarcity of wood for cooking. CHILD is intervening to save the remaining trees by introducing the production of fuel briquettes that are made out of waste materials. The fuel briquettes are friendly because they save energy and also prevent emissions that are dangerous to human health.
