Happy Ace Week! 💜🤍🩶🖤 “Ace” is short for asexual, which means experiencing little or no sexual attraction. It’s like being gay, straight or bi — a natural part of who someone is.

It isn’t a phase nor something people should grow out of. When people don't feel sexual attraction it isn’t a disorder, a trauma response, or a problem to solve. Ace people can love deeply and have close friendships, family bonds and romantic relationships.

If your child or loved one tells you they’re ace, thank them for trusting you. Believe them. You don’t need to understand everything right away. Just being open minded and listening is a wonderful place to start.

As part of LGBTQ+ History Month, we recognize Lucy Hicks Anderson not only for the hardships she faced, but how she lived her life with joy, generosity and courage. 🏳️‍⚧️

Born in Kentucky in 1886, Lucy knew from a young age that she was a girl. At a time when the word “transgender” didn’t exist, her parents listened to a doctor’s advice and raised her as the daughter she knew herself to be. As an adult, she became a beloved chef, baker and hostess in Oxnard, California, known for her parties and her generosity to her community.

When her identity was challenged in court in the 1940s, she stood firm, saying, “I defy any doctor in the world to prove that I am not a woman.”

Lucy’s story is a reminder of what it looks like when families support their children, and when people live proudly as themselves. Today, we honor Lucy for both her pioneering work in trans rights and marriage equality.

Every now and then we see the meme or comment — “If your parents won’t accept you, I’m your mom now.”

While there’s often only good intentions behind that phrase, that’s not how we see it.

We’re not your mom. We’re not your dad. We’re not here to take their place.

We’re here because you deserve love while you wait and hope for the people who should be in your corner to come around.

And if they never do, know there are more than 50,000 chosen family members across the country ready with hugs, warm words and support for you.

Exactly as you are. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
