The Margaree Salmon Association, established in 1982, is a volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of Atlantic salmon, brook trout and their habi

tats. Since its founding, the Margaree Salmon Association has established itself as the voice for the salmon resource and salmon conservation on the Margaree River, including being a lobbying force on behalf of the Margaree Fish Hatchery. An affiliate of the Atlantic Salmon Federation, (ASF), and the Nova Scotia Salmon Association, (NSSA), the MSA has been an active participant in the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee, (RFAC), the Zonal Management Advisory Committee, (ZEMAC) and the Collaborative Fishing Initiative, (CSI Cape Breton), which is chaired/managed by Unama’ki Institute of Natural Resources. Through armour rock bank stabilization programs and the construction of flow diverters and tree revetments, much of the Association’s efforts have centered on habitat restoration and repair. More recently, the association has put more focus on the tributaries feeding the main river which are, in reality, the river’s “hatcheries”. This work has been carried out in partnership with a variety of government agencies as well as the NS Adopt-A-Stream Program, administered by NSSA. Due to the support of our membership, the river and its salmon resource have taken on a spiritual life of their own. Both yearly and occasional visitors, having come under the spell of the river, have felt compelled to do what they can to preserve the river and its salmon by whatever means they are able, whether physically or financially.

Our work crew has been hard at work early this season!

Angler can now once again enjoy the bridge to Tent Pool. We installed this last year but it got washed away in high water. Hopefully this new design will be more sturdy!

They have also been busy putting out benches at pools all over the river so anglers can take a load off.

Huge thanks to our work crew for all their effort

Always a pleasure working with the CRSA!

Today- June 1st- marks two very important events

The first is the opening of the salmon angling season on the Margaree!

The second is the celebration of Wild Salmon Day- a day to reflect on what salmon mean to us. At MSA, we are incredibly grateful for the beautiful runs of Atlantic salmon that return to the Margaree each year.

Let us know what salmon mean to you in the comments. And tight lines to all those getting out fishing today!

The MSA crew has participated in several trainings in the past few weeks!

2 weeks ago MSA tech Stevie and Chéticamp River Salmon Association tech Adam went to Halifax to receive electrofishing training.

Earlier this week all MSA staff attended the Nova Scotia Invasive Species Council environmental DNA training in Antigonish where we learned eDNA among other invasive species monitoring techniques.

The skills learned at these trainings will help us better monitor and conserve native fish species in the Margaree River!
