Cookville Bridge Update:
Over the past several months, many people have reached out asking when the Cookville trail bridge will be replaced. We appreciate everyone’s patience, and we recognize the frustration this closure has caused.
More importantly, we recognize that the loss of this bridge has left all of our multi-use trail users with no choice but to use the Trunk 10 to continue their route. We know this is far from ideal and creates an unnecessary safety concern for everyone using this section of the trail.
We felt it was important to provide an update and clarify the LaHave River Trail Association’s role.
The bridge’s abutment was structurally damaged during Hurricane Lee nearly three years ago and was removed last year. While many people understandably assume LRTA is responsible for replacing it, this is not an LRTA project.
The bridge is located on provincial land under the jurisdiction of the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works (formerly the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal). LRTA has had no involvement in the design, engineering, permitting, scheduling, procurement, or construction of the replacement bridge, and we have no authority to direct or expedite the project.
Historically, when repairs or redecking were required, LRTA secured funding for the work, but because the bridge is provincial infrastructure, the work itself had to be carried out by the Province.
The most recent update we have received is that installation is now anticipated to be completed mid-August, subject to the remaining permit approvals. We understand that previous timelines have changed, and we share the community’s desire to see this important trail connection restored as soon as possible.
As a volunteer organization, we remain committed to maintaining and improving the trail network within our responsibilities. We will continue to share updates as we receive them and look forward to the day this important connection is reopened.
Thank you to everyone for your continued patience, understanding, and support of the LaHave River Trail Association.
