Anerki

Anerki A culturally, linguistically and socially diverse group of humans. We understand the intimate relationship between artist and audience.

Anerki Arts is a collective skilled in film, print, photography, fashion, paint, sculpture, digital art, music, spoken word, rap, singing, dance/movement, acting, comedy and food art. We’re a culturally, linguistically and socially diverse group of humans with deep histories and compelling stories to share with the world. We come together to cultivate gratitude and respect for humanity and the int

erconnection of all things. We believe art has the power to heal and enable a direct and positive change in individuals and society. We’re passionate about telling our stories, spontaneous creation, exploring different methods of expressive-communication and providing interactions/events that have a lasting impact. Through freedom of expression and receptivity of observation, total self-empowerment can ultimately be realised. Established in 2011 and then taking firm ground in September 2015 as a monthly showcasing event for artists to perform, improvise, collaborate, get support and indulge in catharsis. It’s a grassroots movement that has impacted many, fulfilling the need for a regular platform and serving as a community hub, which honours all the different art forms. Occurring as it does in Leicester, a plethora of nationalities, cultures and languages are represented. It places no restrictions on the performer and boundaries between disciplines need not be observed. It is a format where new experimental ideas can be presented to an open minded, multicultural audience without fear of 'failure', while fostering a nurturing and compassionate environment as a safe space sanctuary. Since our beginnings the collective has operated with no formal funding or support and are now determined to seek help to further develop our skills through multiple performance practices including: collaboratively devised theatre, autobiographical performance, production dramaturgy, artistic activism, community-based and participatory art. Cross-collaborating, funding and support will enable us to access professional platforms, training and industry exposure to reach a wider and more diverse audience.

Anerki regular Thomas Tyres (Ridlaa) has made a short film: 'Middle Finger' is an honest, moving and ingeniously creative insight into life with a hidden, neurological illness. a profound questioning of how to 'stay strong', the freedom in letting go of simplistic, damaging ideas of what 'strong' means. Most of all it speaks of the hope which creativity and heartfelt communication can bring in the midst of life's suffering...
