National Wildlife Federation Great Lakes Regional Center

National Wildlife Federation Great Lakes Regional Center NWF Great Lakes is the leader in protecting and restoring the Great Lakes for the people and wildlife depending on the world's greatest freshwater resource.

At the Great Lakes Regional Center, NWF works to restore the Great Lakes; stop invasive species; save Lake Superior from sulfide mining; safeguard the Great Lakes from the effects of climate change; defend the Great Lakes from oil pipeline spills; protect water in the Lakes with the Great Lakes Compact; improve the environments where people live; and connect kids with nature. The Great Lakes are t

he world’s largest surface freshwater ecosystem and contain 20 percent of all surface freshwater on the planet. The five lakes – Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario – are home to numerous fish and wildlife. But, the Great Lakes are fragile and face serious threats from invasive species, toxins, water diversion, wetland destruction, sewage overflows and climate change. Join us in protecting the Great Lakes for generations to come.

Our Sacred Grounds program is celebrating a wonderful collaboration in urban conservation at the Detroit Zen Center in Hamtramck, Michigan. This Buddhist temple embodies the union of urban ecology, community, and zen practice. Thank you to Tiffany S. Jones for your leadership, to Keep Growing Detroit for providing the native plants in our giveaway, and all who attended the rain garden ribbon cutting celebration.

📣 Have you heard? Oil tycoon Enbridge Energy wants to dump billions of gallons of wastewater into Lake Michigan. The company is requesting a permit from to build their proposed Line 5 pipeline tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac, which would allow up to 6 million gallons of daily water withdrawals, plus ongoing wastewater discharges…all while Enbridge simultaneously tries to strip Michigan of its ability to enforce safety, monitor threats, or protect our waters.

‼️We urge Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy to reject this NPDES permit and ALL Line 5 tunnel permits. Our freshwater, our economy, and our future depend on it.

🤔How can you help?
➡️ Speak out against the wastewater permits! Submit your comments to EGLE by June 30 and tell them to say NO to Enbridge’s discharge into Lake Michigan. Link here: https://www.oilandwaterdontmix.org/submit_water_discharge_permit_comment

🎉We’re buzzin’ with good news! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has designated approximately 1.5 million acres of critical habitat across the Midwest for the endangered Rusty Patched Bumble Bee 🐝 Critical habitat designations allow USFWS and its partners to support the recovery and continued conservation efforts of endangered species by guiding cooperation within the federal government.

Previously widespread, the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee experienced a significant decline due to pathogens and diseases, pesticides, effects of climate change, and loss of habitat. Bumble bees are key pollinators, especially of vegetable crops — so, conserving them promotes food security nationwide.

Happy ! 🦋🐝🌼 From bees to hummingbirds, butterflies, moths and more, pollinators play a critical role in helping our ecosystems flourish in the Great Lakes! By transferring pollen from flower to flower, they help a diversity of plants and crops reproduce. Not only does this provide healthy habitat and essential shelter for other animals, but it supports the food supply for people and countless wildlife species 🥗🥒. So the next time you’re shopping for groceries or at your local farmers market, you can thank the pollinators for their part in bringing food to your table!

📣Calling all Wisconsinites: Join us in Rhinelander, WI TODAY, 06/04 at 6:30pm for a public town hall to speak up for the future of our wild, roadless forests.

🌲Established in 2001 by the U.S. Forest Service, the Roadless Area Conservation Rule is one of the most important conservation measures in history. It supports wildlife habitat, clean water, recreation & local economies. It follows sound wildlife science. It provides a balanced, flexible resource management approach. And it could soon be repealed.

➡️If you love spending time in public forestlands and want to see them protected, come and make your voices heard!

🔎ABOUT THE EVENT:
The event’s program will begin promptly at 6:30 with an introductory program that will provide background information about the history of the Roadless Rule. After, the mic will open up for public to make comments. These will be recorded, transcribed, and uploaded as written comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the repeal of the Roadless Rule.
