Hammonds Regiment of Foote We are Colonel Robert Hammonds Regiment of Foote, Cittie of London Brigade, Army of Parliament, Sealed Knot.

We are also the 5th Company of the Memmingen Pikeniere with our good friends and fellow re-enactors in Germany.

Who is coming to see us at Deane Park, Corby for the Sealed Knot Early May bank holiday event? It’s a chance to experience history in a way viewing it on a screen really can’t match. You will smell the campfires and gunpowder smoke (try doing that with a smart phone), you can talk to reenactors, handle artifacts and generally have a really personal and involving experience.

Battle reenactment’s are on the Sunday and Monday.

Today is International Women's Day and as a society, and within our regiment we welcome ladies to join us on the battle field, as well as in a non combatant role. Women are welcome to take up the pike or musket and fight alongside their male counterparts and be treated as equals. With an exciting season ahead, and some great venues why not consider joining us, making new friends, and discovering a wonderful new hobby. Feel free to message for further information. PS, you are welcome to bring your husband or boyfriend :)

In August 2023 we spent the weekend at Margam Park in Wales, a historic house and deer park. Our usual weekend of public displays, living history, camping, beer tent, bands, and fun, but who would have known that a meter underground where we were camping was a Roman villa. We attend some amazing locations throughout the year, often with historic significance. Why not consider joining us in 2026 when you will be made very welcome. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgk8j1gkxelo?fbclid=IwY2xjawPRvElleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeiD8wIbYMScmvlv341jwpCe9-6b_cxEi2ro1wOVRnWwGJBtBoWhMCJXpNhaw_aem_z5rVmTqNoBrzbGApcWCGig

The largest Roman villa ever found in Wales lies less than a metre under Margam Country Park.

Hammond’s are very fortunate in have an ongoing relationship with the Memmingen Pikeniere. Memmingen (a historic Imperial free city in Bavaria) celebrates its Thirty Years War heritage every four years with an amazing event called “Wallensteinfest”. Hammond’s have been attending this spectacular event as guests of the Pikeniere since the 1980’s.

Wallensteinfest is when the city steps back in time to recreate the entry of General Wallenstein and the Imperial army to the city at the height of the Thirty Years War. At that stage of the war Memmingen was under threat from the Swedish Army and Wallenstein’s arrival heralded a period of safety and security for the city’s people. The event starts with the annual Fischertag celebration and runs through the following week include a 17th century army parading around the centre of the old part of Memmingen on the opening and closing Sundays of the event, which is where we get to strut our stuff! All of the city parks are converted into soldier’s camps which are manned throughout the event.

As you will see from the pictures Memmingen is a lovely place to visit and a great centre for touring the south of Bavaria. July 2026 is the next Wallensteinfest and is an event not to be missed. Why not join us and come along as part of next season’s reenactment events.

The public facing FB page of my Sealed Knot regiment. Worth keeping an eye on if you like history or reenactment.

One thing reenactors and actual soldiers all agree on is the need to look after their feet. After all as my old granddad used to tell me “They have to carry you a long way”.

These are my boots, a style sometimes known as start ups. In reality they were probably not common as soldiers footwear as they were associated with agricultural workers. However, both the Royalist and Parliamentarian armies issued shoes in their thousands to their soldiers. These were of a style known as latchet shoes which would be the normal footwear for both pikemen and musketeers.

In the 1640’s shoes didn’t come as a left and a right. Instead they were “straight lasted” so both shoes in a pair were identical and could be worn on either foot. I’m told that this continued until the Victorian period where soldiers were made to swop their shoes over from left foot to right foot every day to even out the wear!
