Solace Friends: Community, Comfort, and Care at Life's End Providing a home for those experiencing homelessness and terminal illness htpps://www.solacefriends.org.

Solace has emerged from a small seed, first germinated by Dr. Ann Catlett, who for years had concerns about the lack of quality care for terminally ill persons in marginalized populations. Witnessing the absence of much-needed services in our area prompted her to share her dream to create a home for dying persons who had little hope of garnering support for a peaceful death—those experiencing home

lessness or marginalized by poverty, social isolation, due to addiction, mental illness, and other issues. As others heard of Ann’s vision, many quickly asked to join the effort, and soon a core working group of volunteer physicians, nurses, social workers, hospice workers and community activist began meeting to explore in depth, the feasibility of creating a social model hospice home (SMHH)—a welcoming, safe, and comfortable residential space where people experiencing homelessness might be receive holistic, person-centered care that nurtures bodily comfort, emotional and spiritual wholeness, and individual dignity at the end of life. Over the past several years, the Solace working group has been able to forge critical alliances with key members of the health and housing service providers in the Dane County community and we have created a detailed vision for an appropriate model of service delivery. This vision includes a three-phase timing and action plan to do everything necessary to actually begin providing care to members of our target service population—this includes, budgets, funding, securing a house, hiring staff and volunteers, etc.
