Today is National Sorry Day.

We acknowledge and recognise members of the Stolen Generations and the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were forcibly removed from their families and communities.

On this day in 1997, the Bringing Them Home report was tabled in Parliament and detailed the national inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.

Corporal Thomas Lea, 10 Platoon, D Company, 6 RAR, moves into a Viet Cong village with his Owen gun at the ready during the first mission by the 6th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment.

Better known as Buddy, he was one of 26 Australians of 6RAR wounded in the battle of Long Tan. Shot three times while trying to pull a mate to safety, he returned to duty after recovering, and continued serving until 1995, having spent 35 years in the Australian Army.

An Indigenous soldier of Aboriginal and South Sea Islander heritage, he was one of approximately 500 known Indigenous Australians to serve during the Vietnam War.
