General information

Every year, nearly 805 million people do not have enough to eat. Our club’s goal is to repurpose food from big companies such as Starbucks and Noah’s Bagels, that would have otherwise been disposed. The food will be distributed to the homeless and less fortunate around the San Jose / Cupertino area. At the end of every work day, one third of the food produced in the world is simply wasted, so by allocating leftovers to the less fortunate, we are also minimizing local food wastage. Since global poverty is a such a widespread issue and affects so many, any food distribution, even within just one or two cities, helps to slowly alleviate the effects of poverty and chronic hunger. Since our club is focused specifically on hunger, an alternate goal is drawing attention to and informing the public of the magnitude of global hunger. Most people know poverty and hunger is a problem in the world, but little more than that. GHI will inform students of the conditions of third world countries, while also highlighting the hunger present in our society that would otherwise go unnoticed. Additionally, we will be having fundraising for Action Against Hunger, an organization that provides for malnourished children and establishes sustainable solutions to hunger. Only when people are properly informed of the actual global hunger situation can they be effective in opposing it. Additionally, our club seeks to provide students with an opportunity to get involved with their community and make San Jose a better place to live. By distributing food, students actively take steps to reduce homelessness in San Jose. Most people, especially high school students, struggle to make an impact on community simply because there is no local, immediate opportunity. Our club will serve as an outlet for students to serve the community.
