First Fruits Community Allotment & Orchard - South Cave

We rent a two acre allotment and have planted it up with Apples, Pears, Plums, soft fruit and vegetables. Everyone welcome to join us on Saturday mornings.

We began renting the one acre plot in April 2010. Chris heard about community orchards. So, together with a group of friends we agreed to grow soft fruits such as raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, gooseberries and blackberries as well as some vegetables. We also planted apple trees, pears, plums, cherries, nuts and some other varieties not readily available in the shops. We agreed to run ou

r project as the early Christians would have done: those who could afford to, put money up, others gave their time. Everyone would share equally and any surplus would be given away. We have enjoyed many fruits and vegetables from apples, plums, quince, pears, beans, potatoes, asparagus, artichokes, sweetcorn and rhubarb, raspberries and currants. In 2011 we rented the neighbouring acre plot and planted more trees including cider apples. We are a caring, sharing, family orientated bunch of people who enjoy having a laugh and don't mind the odd bit of hard work close to nature. The allotmenteers at First Fruits Community Alloment & Orchard entered a few classes at South Cave Show on Monday and won a few prize cards. We all enjoyed the show. Did you see Chris presenting the trophies? Come and see us at the allotment on Saturday mornings to ask more info about the orchard. South Cave Show

Loving allotment life - we have started harvesting from the allotment. We have to protect almost all the crops from being eaten by wildlife. If anyone has any spare items such as blue water pipe, scaffolding net and anything that can build a cage we would be very grateful for any donations. Also bark chippings from local tree surgeons. 🙂
