Over 6 weeks and 13 journeys REACH Weymouth achieved something quite remarkable.

Reading Through Recovery takes place every Thursday and brings people together to explore recovery through books, conversation and shared experience.

This safe space brought together 13 people, all at different points in their recovery and very different relationships with words. Because this group isn’t about picking up a novel and discussing its contents – it's about reconnecting with language in whatever way feels manageable.

That might sound small, but it really isn’t. Each week has a different theme and those themes have opened up conversations that go far beyond the page. People have shared their personal stories about what impact words have on them.

Over the sessions, another shift has taken place. There has been a whole shift of confidence in people attending the group. People who arrived unsure about themselves have started to find their voice.

Reading Through Recovery isn’t your traditional book club, it’s a space where stories in any form, personal or not, can help you to reconnect with yourself.

The communities we serve, defined by geography or identity, experience unfair disadvantages every day, whether in our deindustrialised areas, coastal towns dealing with entrenched poverty, or people facing systemic discrimination because of their ethnicity or gender.

In the North East, proportionally twice as many people die through using drugs than in the East of England. Race remains one of the main drivers of unequal experiences of mental ill health and support.

Trauma, poverty, social exclusion, addiction, mental ill health, experiences of the criminal justice system, loneliness and a lack of a decent home combine to exacerbate these inequalities.

Health and social care systems have evolved to provide the best fit for the most people. But people and their problems don’t fit into neatly labelled boxes. And individual people exist in networks of friends or family who are overlooked.

Relationships are everything.

Adam Garrett was supported by Aquarius Charity our gambling service. Adam volunteered with Aquarius and now he works for Waythrough full time, and this is his story in his own words.

Life before gambling was good. I had a decent paid job; I had a girlfriend I’d been with for 6 years and we were saving for a house and planning to start a family.

Then in 2018 I found gambling.

It was the last day of a family holiday, and we took the kids to an arcade where there was an adult section. I decided to try my luck and I hit the jackpot! Over 200 euros!

I came home with a fair bit of savings and started to play the fruit machine at my local pub. It went on from there.

It all started with small bets, but I kept winning so my bets got bigger.

Gambling became a daily habit. I thought I’d cracked the code. However, over the next 6 months I lost all of it. Then I was lent £1,500 and I lost that too.

My life had become unmanageable and my gambling led to alcohol and substance use. I hit rock bottom.

In 2022 I reached out to AGL for support with my alcohol use. I still gambled when I could but by then the alcohol and drugs had taken over. I did 3 detoxes between 2022 and 2024. I relapsed.

I had a plan when I went into recovery. My main 2 goals were to get a place of my own and to volunteer and retrain myself. Through my recovery I was offered opportunities to volunteer and eventually work for Waythrough.

We asked our volunteers to participate in our annual survey to help us understand and improve how they feel in their role.

Overall, we’re pleased to share they feel highly motivated, valued and proud of the difference they make. 💚

This tells a very strong, positive story around volunteer impact, inclusion, wellbeing and organisational culture here at Waythrough.

We will be sharing some findings from this survey over the coming weeks, but we’d like to begin by thanking all of our incredible volunteers for taking part and the amazing work you all do. 🙌
