Today is Monday, June 15th, and it is time to meet Thomas and Matilda in the 2026 Dog of the Day calendar.

Thomas and Matilda were two gifts sent from Heaven to help guide us through important chapters of our lives.

Thomas was a big boy, weighing in at 17 pounds. It often felt like I had a majestic creature from the forest living in my home. In his younger years, he was playful and full of energy, and as he got older, he became incredibly loving and affectionate. He also helped us raise Matilda, who joined our family at just six weeks old.

Matilda was always a sweet, playful girl. Over the years, she grew especially close to me, almost like a daughter. When we look back at our lives before them and compare them to where we are today, we see just how much has changed. Thomas and Matilda were a big part of that journey and played an important role in shaping the lives we have now.

In a perfect world, dogs and cats would live forever. They are innocent, pure, and love without conditions. God trusted us to give them good lives and a loving home, and in the end, they trusted us to take away their pain and suffering.

The hardest thing we’ve ever had to do was let them rest. They were our best friends, our family, and a part of our everyday lives. Even though they are no longer here with us, they will always be in our hearts and walking beside us.

Thomas and Matilda were greatly loved by Keny and Gregory.

Roxy's mom flew in from Las Vegas and she got a chauffeured ride to her new home. We hear camping is in her future.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Onyx von Oelsnitz

Onyx von Oelsnitz is a beautiful 18-month-old bicolor German Shepherd. Young and playful, mid-sized Onyx is friendly with everyone at the rescue and always ready for a fun adventure. He's sweet and affectionate and will bury his head in your arms. In a home, he needs a chance to get to know new people before welcoming them in. Super motivated by treats, Onyx knows his basic commands including Sit and Down. He loves his outings at the rescue, including running alongside a bike. While Onyx is very good with dogs in playgroups, he'd rather not share his home with another dog, so he would do best as your one and only dog in the home. (And no cats please.)

Onyx was rescued by a Good Sam from the South L.A. animal shelter and surrendered to us.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Vienna von Vierden

Vienna von Vierden is a stunning 2-year-old German Shepherd who is full of affection. This outgoing and friendly pup has mastered her leash skills, walking easily and nicely right next to you while sweet-naturedly looking up for guidance. She loves people, happily greeting anyone passing by with a gentle lick on their hands, and loves to snuggle up in your arms when she is being petted and showered with kisses. She is equally wonderful with other pups; she does great in playgroups, acts as an easygoing mingler, and comfortably explores the yard while welcoming any dog that comes up to greet her. Smart and treat-motivated, she already knows her sit command and takes treats very gently. Vienna’s happy, ready-for-anything personality makes her a joyful companion who is completely ready to find her forever home.

She was rescued from the Kern County animal shelter.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Hennessy von Ronnenberg

Hennessy von Ronnenberg is a gorgeous 6-7 -year-old Husky-mix. Hennessy lived on a ranch, but he lost his home when his owner was no longer able to care for him. His owner described him as a great dog who is good with kids, dogs, and livestock (he's not for cats). He's on the smaller side, at around 45 lbs, and has been a mild presence at the rescue as he adjusts to his new circumstances. He enjoys being petted, takes treats nicely, and walks well on leash. In playgroups he is a good greeter and mingles politely.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - Gabi von Garmish

Gabi von Garmish is a gorgeous 11–12 -month-old German Shepherd whose signature floppy ear instantly steals the spotlight and adds to her friendly look. Gabi is all about love and connection. She adores meeting people and other dogs, meeting people with kisses and nuzzles, and meeting other dogs with happy tail wags. (If there are kids, she's more comfortable with those who are 9 and up.) She is attentive, knows her "sit" command, takes treats gently and does well on car rides. She would enjoy another dog in the home, as she loves mingling in doggy playgroups, and might join in some play. (She's a no for kitties but has tested well with a small dog.) Come by and see if Gabi is the one for you!

Gabi was found by staff near the rescue.

Today is Sunday, June 14th, and it is time to meet Grayton in the 2026 Dog of the Day calendar.

Grayton, formerly Hunny von Hollen, was adopted from Westside in April 2022, at just under a year old. We don’t quite know her true birthday, but we celebrate it in June! Happy 5th Birthday, Grayton!

When we adopted her in 2022, she had already spent several months at the rescue after being saved, along with her two siblings, Sunny and Bunny, from a high-kill shelter. Sadly, the three of them had been found abandoned in the desert as young pups. Grayton was the last to be adopted, as she was quite shy and unsure around people. But when she met our two dogs, Belvidere and Indie, she immediately bonded with them—and within a few weeks, she learned to love us too.

Named after one of our favorite beaches in Florida, Grayton Beach - she’s spunky, silly, and full of personality. She makes us laugh every single day. True to her adventurous spirit, Grayton loves camping trips and has traveled all over the country with us as a military family.

This photo was taken in August 2025 at St.George Island. We’re forever grateful to Westside for saving her and bringing such joy into our lives. Grayton is loved by Beanie, Jordan, her furry-siblings and many other family members & friends!
