On Friday, April 8, 2011, Grand Traverse Metro Firefighters proudly transported a 9/11 artifact donated to the Department from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Draped in an American flag, this 3,100 lb piece of steel, recovered from the North Tower of the World Trade Center site after September 11, 2001, arrived in Traverse City. nter site has been secured at the JFK Airport by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey until recently when the September 11th Families Associations began the effort to distribute the steel in hopes of creating memorials across the county. Lee Lelpi, President of the Association, writes in his letter to fire departments across the country “The steel withstood the most horrific attack on American soil that took the lives of 2,973 innocent people – one of whom was my son Jonathan Lelpi, a firefighter with FDNY Squad 288.”
