Child Helpline International Child Helpline International is the global network of child helplines around the world Child helplines are help and support services for children.

Child helplines provide children with their fundamental right to be heard, as utlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC), and also play a key role in shaping, strengthening and filling in the gaps of existing national child protection systems. Often, child helplines are a young person’s first point of contact with child protection services and the most trusted and

accessible gateway for them to find help. Child helplines use a variety of methods to ensure that children can access help and find someone to talk to at all times. These methods include telephone services, mobile phone text messaging, online via email, chat and forums, drop boxes in schools, post, caravans, radio and more. Child helpline counselors actively listen to children who wish to express their concerns and also link those children to resources and emergency assistance when needed. Child helplines focus on children’s rights, including the right to be heard and the right to participation. Often, child helplines are a young persons’ first point of contact with child protection services and the most trusted and accessible gateway for them to find much needed further support. Child helplines are in the unique position of being privy to children’s true voices, as they themselves choose to express them. Realizing the potential of this wealth of information, Child Helpline International (CHI) collects data from all of its member child helplines worldwide on the numbers and nature of contacts they receive. CHI uses this data to advocate globally for children and their rights, as set down in the UN CRC, and to help pave the way to consolidating and strengthening national child protection systems.

It’s International Child Helpline Day! But we still need to make child helplines truly international...

Currently, over 130 countries operate a national child helpline. However, more than 40 countries still lack this essential service, leaving gaps in their child protection systems. Together with partners including UNICEF and state actors, we are committed to bridging these gaps by mapping existing services for children, assessing the feasibility of establishing child helplines, and working country by country to set up toll-free, 24/7 helplines accessible across appropriate contact channels.

Our goal is a child helpline in every country of the world by 2030! It’s time to ensure that no child’s voice is left unheard.

It’s International Child Helpline Day – the day we celebrate the incredible work done by child helplines across the globe to help and support our children and young people.

Did you know that, in 2024, child helplines received over 6 million calls? That means that, somewhere in the world, a child helpline telephone was ringing, or a counsellor was opening an email, or a chat room was receiving a message from a child or young person, every 5 seconds.

During that entire year, 2,584,715 of these calls were from children and young people who went on to receive advice and support, comfort and counselling from the child helpline. That's around 7,063 calls a day; almost 300 calls an hour; 5 calls per minute.

Every 12 seconds a child or young person was being supported by a child helpline counsellor. Every Second Counts...

It's International Child Helpline Day – a day to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions made by staff and volunteers in child helplines all around the world.

We’re proud of every single one of our child helpline members. Every day, they provide help, support and advice to children and young people whatever their concerns– their mental health and wellbeing; violence or abuse they might be experiencing, online or off. No matter what, child helplines are there for them.

On this very special day, it really is time to come together and ensure that no child will ever be left unheard!

The need to protect children in digital spaces has never been more urgent. Child helplines are a frontline defence in the fight for online safety. They provide a trusted, accessible space for children and young people who are facing online harm, offering them crucial guidance, crisis intervention and referrals to specialized services.

From physical or sexual abuse, to neglect, exploitation and online bullying, violence against children is a pervasive issue. As we approach this year’s International Child Helpline Day on 17 May, we remind governments, policymakers and decision-takers that we must step up efforts to end violence in childhood if we are to achieve the vision of a world of peace, justice and inclusion, where every child is able to live free from violence.

Making sure that children and young people have access to mental health support has become more important – and urgent – than ever. As we approach this year’s International Child Helpline Day on 17 May, we repeat our call for action by governments, policymakers and decision-makers to strengthen and expand the capacity of child helplines as a frontline response to meet the increasing demand for their services.

One in six boys experience sexual violence – yet stigma, harmful gender norms and persistent systemic gaps keep their suffering invisible. Without stronger support for boys, families and communities to face the issue, boys worldwide are left without the help they need to cope, survive and thrive.

That's why we're supporting our friends at FamilyForEveryChild.org to mark Blue Umbrella Day, a global campaign calling for greater recognition, prevention and response to sexual violence against boys. By the end of 2026, we envision stronger families, more resilient communities and protection systems that ensure every child receives the support they need.

We are uniting voices worldwide to say . On Safer Internet Day, 10 February, we call for safety-by-design in tools and a global ban on nudifying functionalities. Together, we can send a powerful message: nudifying tools have no place in a world that values children’s safety and dignity.

This technology is a new vector for exploitation, putting women and children, particularly girls, at unprecedented risk. Deepfakes are closely linked to sexual coercion, extortion, and blackmail.

At Child Helpline International, , Watch Foundation, , , Online, and Global Alliance, we are deeply concerned with the rise of AI tools capable of nudifying children. This functionality serves no good purpose and should be explicitly and universally illegal.
