Today, marks the federal observation of Juneteenth - when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation that legally freed enslaved people, two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This year, the CT General Assembly approved and Governor Lamont signed into law legislation recognizing Juneteenth as a legal state holiday.

4-CT celebrated by attending the 2022 Juneteenth Panel Discussion and Flag Raising Ceremony at the State Capitol. Connecticut holds a unique space in Juneteenth history as home to one of the creators of the Juneteenth flag, Ben Haith, born in Stamford and resident of Norwich.

4-CT works to address systemic injustice through direct cash assistance programs and strategic collaborations with community based organizations and our amazing state officials and governor, who helped pass this bill.

4-CT has partnered with IRIS - Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services since the beginning of the pandemic to distribute $256K in direct cash assistance across CT largely through IRIS's SUN (Services for Undocumented Neighbors) Team.

The SUN Team serves immigrants and displaced people without status by (1) providing basic services around health, education, and legal services and (2) helping them become strong self-advocates.

4-CT is proud to support IRIS and their SUN team by providing no-strings-attached financial assistance to their clients to cover issues including housing, legal fees, health and wellness.

4-CT believes that direct cash assistance is the most impactful and efficient way of delivering resources to our neighbors throughout the state. Individuals and families know best what they need, and trusting people to make their own decisions about how they spend their money is effective in both achieving outcomes and preserving dignity.

The money gets to people quickly, and most of it goes for food, housing, or utilities. Recipients report better mental health and lower hunger rates.
