Cold Winter Warm Winter by Sae Chang breaks down the science of staying warm, without harming the planet.

Few realize that weather-related causes account for about 10% of global deaths, with nearly 90% linked to cold. Despite being overlooked, cold exposure remains one of the most persistent and underestimated threats to human health. While the elderly, infants, and underserved communities face higher risks, even healthy adults can suffer frostbite, hypothermia, or, in extreme cases, death. This underscores the importance of understanding how the body reacts to cold and the vital role thermal textiles play in protection.

Part of the campaign, this smart guide exposes myths around textile sustainability and shows how smarter materials, design, and daily choices can keep you safe from the cold and reduce your environmental footprint.

Winter textiles (jackets, duvets, sleeping bags, etc.) are susceptible to bacterial growth, because of their layered construction, especially those filled with natural down. The multilayer structure provides an environment where moisture is easily trapped inside. This moisture can come from two main sources: our own sweat or external humidity. Sweat, in particular, contains food for bacteria, e.g., urea, fatty acid, ammonia, etc. With this, where there’s moisture, bacteria thrive.

What’s important to know is that this growth develops much more easily in natural fibers than in synthetics. As natural fibers retain much more moisture, creating a friendlier environment for bacteria.
While bacteria in fabrics can’t be entirely avoided, understanding the difference between natural and synthetic materials can help improve thermal performance, hygiene, and long-term comfort in your winter gear.

Case Study: I bought a polyester piece, for 20 years its color barely changed. But a cotton item I bought faded completely in just 2 years. Why? Because natural fibers are multiple times more chemically reactive with chemicals in water. As a result, they loose colors (and other chemicals) much easier.

This brings us to one of the most urgent issues we face: toxicity.
When colors fade, it is the indication that the dyes and chemicals leach out into water and surrounding environment. These chemicals contain highly toxic and reactive chemicals. They circulate around the world through the streams of air and water, thus reach us regardless of where we live through food sources and even the air we breath in.
This is not just an environmental issue, it’s a public health threat.

👉 Be aware. Take action. And if you want to dive deeper into the impact of textile toxicity and the differences between natural and synthetic fibers, read Be a Green Hero (https://www.amazon.ca/GREEN-HEROES-MISINFORMATION-ENVIRONMENTAL-SUSTAINABILITY/dp/B0DM5GGRR7)

Do you know how to choose the best winter coat?
A high price tag doesn’t always mean the best protection against the cold. Two simple methods can help you test the quality of insulation in your jacket:

Cell Phone Light Method. Shine a light through the fabric. If no light passes through, this indicates good insulation.
Folding & Compression Method. If the coat compresses significantly, it means a large amount of air is trapped inside. The more air that is retained, the better the insulation, since it is the trapped air that helps keep you warm.

Understanding how textiles protect us from the cold goes beyond just coats, it’s about the science of fabrics, insulation, and sustainability.

📖 Want to dive deeper into the secrets of winter protection? Discover Cold Winter, Warm Winter : a book that explores weather, textiles, and how the right choices keep us warm while caring for the planet.
