🌱🌳 Landport Mini Forest Update! 🌳🌱

We’re delighted to see how well our little forest is growing, despite the intense heat of summer! ☀️🌿

At today’s monthly community meet-up, we came together to care for the forest, check on its progress and give our young trees some much-needed TLC. 💚

A huge thank you to all our wonderful forest community volunteers who have helped keep the forest thriving through the summer. Your time and care really do make a difference! 🙌🌱

🎥 And a special thank you to Kian from the Gibraltar Horticultural Society for creating this beautiful video and capturing the forest’s progress.

🌳 But what exactly is a mini forest?

Mini forests are densely planted pockets of native and locally appropriate trees, shrubs and plants that recreate the layers of a natural woodland ecosystem. Using the Miyawaki method, they can establish quickly and create valuable habitat for wildlife, support biodiversity, improve soil and bring nature into our urban spaces. 🐝🦋🐦

And we want YOU to be part of it! 🌿

Our monthly forest meet-ups are open to everyone — whether you’re a gardening expert or have never planted a tree before.

🌿Collaboration is at the heart of regeneration.

A wonderful few days in Lisbon meeting with the teams from Urbem and sharing ideas, learning from each other’s experiences, and getting hands-on in one of Urbem’s newly planted mini forests.

The biggest takeaway? Mini forests thrive because communities do.

Now it’s Gibraltar’s turn!

💚 Join us and our planting partners, The Gibraltar Horticultural Society, at the Landport Mini Forest:

📅 Tuesday 1 July | 4–7 pm
📅 Saturday 4 July | 11 am–1 pm

Come for an hour or stay for the whole session as we care for our growing forest and install our first olla watering systems.

Together, we’re growing more than forests, we’re growing community.

🌿 Art, Nature and Community Coming Together at Landport Mini Forest 🌿
We are delighted to celebrate the completion of two stunning carved tree sculptures at the Landport Mini Forest, created by renowned wildlife artist Paul Sivell, who travelled from the UK to Gibraltar for the project.
Many in Gibraltar will remember Paul’s remarkable work in the Alameda Botanic Gardens over a decade ago. This time, alongside the talented Andrew Abrines, he has transformed two dead tree trunks into beautiful works of art celebrating some of Gibraltar’s native wildlife.
The sculptures feature iconic local species including the peregrine falcon, Barbary partridge, Moorish gecko, bees and butterflies. The diving peregrine is particularly breathtaking, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, where these magnificent birds nest and breed.
At Whole Wild World and the The Gibraltar Horticultural Society, we believe that successful mini forests are about far more than trees alone. By integrating art, culture, education and biodiversity, these spaces become places that inspire curiosity, connection and community pride.
These sculptures now provide a lasting focal point within the forest, helping visitors discover and appreciate the wildlife that shares this landscape with us.
We would like to thank Paul Sivell and Andrew Abrines for their incredible craftsmanship and dedication in bringing this vision to life.
We also welcome conversations with local businesses and organisations interested in sponsoring artistic, educational and biodiversity features within our mini forests. Together, we can continue creating spaces where nature, people and creativity thrive.

Maintenance + Bioblitz + Living Art in Progress 🌱

The mini forest is still in full expression. Flowers are holding their colour, insects are active, and the ecosystem is moving through its seasonal peak.

On the first Wednesday of June, 3–7pm, the Whole Wild World and The Gibraltar Horticultural Society will be back on site for our monthly forest meet for a hands-on maintenance and a community bioblitz.

We’ll be observing, recording, and helping the space stay healthy and resilient as it continues to develop.

This month also brings something unusual and worth witnessing:

Tree carving in action (first 2 weeks of June)
Expert tree carver Paul Sivell will be working on-site, beginning a live transformation of selected trees into carved ecological features. This is not just art, it’s a long-term habitat intervention that will evolve with the forest.

You’re welcome to come by to see the process unfolding.

What we’ll be doing:

* Habitat and path maintenance and light invasive species removal work
* Bioblitz recording (plants, insects, birds, fungi)
* Observing seasonal ecological changes
* Supporting ongoing forest development work
* Engaging with the tree carving process on-site

We genuinely need more hands to keep these monthly meet-ups effective. Whether you can help for an hour or the full session, it makes a real difference 💚

Seat of Hope #4 🦈
Sponsored by Cert Insurance Group
Supporting The Nautilus Project

Artist Ireana Schwock brings the ocean to life through the scalloped hammerhead shark, now Critically Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List.

We were honoured by the attendance of the Minister for the Environment, and extend our sincere thanks to the HM Government of Gibraltar for enabling these benches at Europa Point to become a platform for conservation and awareness.

Sharks are essential to healthy oceans, yet they are disappearing fast. The Nautilus Project continues to drive real change for Gibraltar’s marine life and community.

Next step: Birdlife 🐦
We are now inviting sponsors to support upcoming Seat of Hope benches at the lighthouse, dedicated to Gibraltar’s incredible birdlife.

Be part of the movement.

The future of nature is not something that just happens to us, it’s something we choose.

This World Rewilding Day, we’re reflecting on the growing awareness that we are not separate from the natural world, but part of it and that reconnection is where real change begins.

Through Urban2Rewild, we’re creating mini forests in urban spaces, small but powerful gateways to the wild that reconnect communities, inspire stewardship, and link people back to the wider landscapes we depend on.

Because when people reconnect with nature, they begin to protect it.

Let’s choose a future where nature thrives. 🌿
