Can you help us?

Ash Heritage Group is planning a project based on the highly successful and influential initiative by Neil MacGregor, then director of the British Museum, in 2010 called ‘A History of the World in 100 objects’. MacGregor took a chronological approach, ranging from a 2 million-year-old hand axe to a then contemporary solar-powered lamp, and we aim to do something similar to tell the story of our village.

We intend to assemble these objects in two ways: in a pamphlet, which can go on our website or be printed, or both; and in an exhibition in the Village Hall, possibly in Spring 2027. The figure of 20 objects is arbitrary, but can be viewed as the minimum necessary for a worthwhile number of exhibits. The result should, we hope, be a fascinating, accessible and valuable tour through our history.

Now this is where you come in. ‘Objects’ can be defined broadly. Not just human-made artefacts, but documents, items from nature (any woolly mammoth tusks out there?), buildings, landscape features and so on. Almost everyone has some item of interest in their home, garden or garage, and even if you don’t, you may well know of something that would fit the bill: an interesting gravestone, field outline or milestone perhaps. Or even an interesting person! We would particularly welcome items from long ago, such as the 16th-18th centuries (or even earlier: Roman, for instance), Georgian-Victorian times, e.g. the 18th-19th century agricultural revolution, and of course the two world wars.

AHG members may like to know of this forthcoming event at All Saints Church, West Stourmouth on Sat 24th January. All Saints is part of the same local Benefice which includes St Nicholas, Ash, and these days is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT). It is well worth a visit for its remarkably historic interior alone and it is hoped the parish's 16th century churchwardens' account book will also be on display. More information can be seen here: https://www.visitchurches.org.uk/what-we-do/news/safeguarding-west-stourmouths-heritage-community-and-partners-rally-to-restore-all-saints-bell-turret and here: https://www.visitchurches.org.uk/visit/our-churches/all-saints-church-west-stourmouth-kent A warm welcome awaits all AHG members!
