📢 APMEN has released a new case study highlighting how peer-to-peer learning is accelerating malaria elimination across the Asia Pacific. 🌏

Through cross-country exchange visits, national malaria programmes are strengthening capacity, translating evidence into practice, and advancing integrated approaches tailored to real-world challenges.

As countries enter the final phase of elimination, sustained collaboration and practical, country-led learning are more important than ever.

Between February and May 2026, APMEN convened 4 peer-to-peer exchange visits across Cambodia, Malaysia, and Thailand, bringing together national malaria programme representatives from 17 countries. 🤝

These exchanges go beyond knowledge sharing. By placing programme teams inside real-world implementation settings, they enable countries to observe how strategies work in practice, adapt approaches to their local context, and strengthen both technical capacity and policy development.

💡 A strong example comes from the Indonesia–Malaysia exchange on zoonotic malaria surveillance, where hands-on learning and structured dialogue directly informed national-level thinking on surveillance systems and simian malaria guideline development.

👉 As countries move toward the final stages of malaria elimination, practical, context-specific learning is no longer optional. It is essential.

💡 Strengthening communities for malaria elimination

🛣️ During APMEN’s Melanesian visit, partners highlighted the critical role of community-based approaches in reaching underserved populations.

Experiences from Malaria Consortium Cambodia underscored how collaboration between national programme and civil society organisations can bridge gaps and improve access to malaria testing and treatment.

🤝 By strengthening these connections, countries can accelerate progress towards malaria elimination, ensuring no community is left behind.

How can climate science better inform public health action? 🌏

APMEN, in collaboration with Climate, Environment and Health Programme and Centre for Climate Research Singapore recently hosted an online climate training workshop to strengthen understanding of climate variability, projections, and their relevance for climate-informed health planning. The workshop highlighted the importance of translating climate information into practical insights to support preparedness, adaptation, and decision-making for malaria and other vector-borne diseases.

As Dr Aurel Moise, Deputy Director, Centre for Climate Research Singapore, shared: “Climate science provides a critical foundation for understanding how environmental change is shaping health risks today and in the future…”

Driving Integration for Impact: One Network Advancing Malaria Elimination through Coordinated Systems and Shared Learning

🔊Across the month, APMEN brought countries together to strengthen integrated malaria elimination efforts through technical collaboration, peer-to-peer learning, and country-led engagement.

From the Joint Working Groups Meeting to study visits in Thailand, malaria programmes shared practical solutions and gained hands-on insights into integrated systems spanning surveillance, laboratories, pharmacovigilance, and the implementation of tafenoquine and G6PD testing for P. vivax.

APMEN also focused its work on emerging priorities, including climate-informed health planning and system resilience, through large-scale training, webinar, and new knowledge product. In the coming months, APMEN will undergo its institutional hosting transition from APLMA to a new host, ensuring continuity and sustainability of its country-led platform supporting malaria elimination across the Asia Pacific.

🌟 From policy to practice: seeing malaria elimination systems in action matters.

The study tour to Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) offered an important opportunity for peer-to-peer learning, demonstrating how integrated malaria systems can strengthen elimination efforts and long-term resilience.

Through direct exchanges, country representatives from 16 countries explored how laboratories, entomology, information systems, pharmacovigilance, and operational coordination work together within routine health systems to sustain progress toward elimination.

🤝 Peer-to-peer learning in action for malaria elimination

As part of the APMEN Joint Working Groups Meeting 2026, representatives from 17 National Malaria Programmes joined a technical study visit to Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) to explore how integrated systems — from 📊 surveillance and 💊 pharmacovigilance to 🔬 laboratories and 🦟 entomology — support malaria elimination and prevention of re-establishment.

The visit offered valuable opportunities to exchange practical experiences, reflect on implementation, and explore how lessons learned can be adapted across different country contexts. 🌏

A sincere thank you to Dr. Woraya Luang-on and the dedicated team at Thailand’s Division of Vector Borne Diseases (DVBD) for their warm hospitality, technical leadership, and openness in sharing experiences. 🙏 Your support made this exchange a meaningful learning opportunity for the region.

Together, stronger collaboration and shared learning continue to move us closer to a malaria-free future. ✨
