Alfie 💔

Last week capped what has been a devastating month of loss here at Millington’s when we were forced to say goodbye to our beloved Alfs.

Nobody thinks of a farm dog when they hear Bichon Frisé but weeks after arriving with Rosie in 2020, it became clear that was his destiny! Chores, medical procedures, muck outs - they were all done with Alfie by our side. For such a small boy he had a huge personality. Everyone who met him loved him and the sanctuary isn’t the same without him. At least the sheep will no longer be confused over who the new guy is… 😂

Heartbreak and loss come with the job. It doesn’t make it any easier. October saw six icons leave Millington’s. Alfie, Eddie, Gustavo, Dora, Edward and Sandy. Members of our family who brought with them heaps of happiness and joy.

Thank you, our extended family, for bearing with the sadness in this, the most difficult time we have ever faced. We love and appreciate every single one of you. We’ll be back to our usual selves in November.

What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of Millington’s forever ❤️

Patricia stood up and walked!!!! ☺️😍

Yes I know it doesn’t sound like much, but with the 7 days we have had it is huge progress and motivation to keep fighting with him. Movement and walks were essential for his recovery and he has nailed each target with flying colours

The first thing he did was check everywhere for Gustavo 💔

His IV line has now been removed and for the first time since Sunday, Rosie will sleep in a bed as opposed to the stable floor.

Don’t worry, we won’t be getting complacent and every 3 hours we’ll be up to check on him. Patricia could still fall victim to either Sepsis or Leaky Rumen - we are so close to his recovery we can almost taste it! The aim now is to get him eating again so he can regain his strength

Patricia needs your prayers 🙏

Sanctuaries have a way of trying to break you when you are already down and this week has been nothing short of heartbreak. I can’t even believe now that I’m saying this. I’m typing through tears - our king, our Gustavo is gone. His best friend Pat is fighting for his life 😭

On Saturday they broke through a fence into the geese area and before we got there they had ingested a large amount of duck feed and corn, both highly dangerous for ruminant animals. Rosie and Gracie stepped in with emergency treatment without which they would have died overnight. Come morning, they both looked well. They were both toiletting regular and if I had any money I would have been confident betting they were out of the woods. Tragedy struck just 3 hours later.

Pat crashed first at 11:30am, Gustavo followed him shortly after. He died in my arms five minutes before the emergency vet arrived. We are absolutely devastated, heartbroken and running on fumes but Patricia needs us all for him to pull through as he is now in metabolic acidosis. We havnt yet had the chance to grieve our king

Our amazing volunteers have rallied round him as we try and flush the toxins from him with numerous IV lines alongside other medication. He is under constant 24 hour monitoring, Rosie (and Alfie) slept in the field with him on Sunday as he was too weak to move, they joined him again last night in his stable. He’s nowhere near out of the woods yet but he is fighting and fighting hard 💔

We have lost the battle 💔

Almost 12 months after the loss of our first ever rescue, Truffles, to chronic osteoarthritis - we are heartbroken today to admit defeat in another battle against this cruel disease. This time, with our wonderful cattle patriarch - Eddie 😭

Ed arrived at the sanctuary 6 years ago after being found abandoned, emaciated and malnourished. By the time his hooves touched his forever home he had been moved between 8 different farms - the last of them was truly horrific. I won’t share his arrival photos as they are just too shocking 😭

Rebuilding an animal’s trust is different for every one of them and Eddie was another level of challenge. We read our books out loud to him, we ate our dinner next to him and for months spent every spare moment we had with him, inching our way closer each time and building those bridges step by step 🫂

Good things come to those who wait and our patience was rewarded with a bond like no other. Eddie is gentle, peaceful and measured in a herd of rowdy boys. Since spring 2020 he has enjoyed lush green grass, an endless supply of cuddles and his own personal stash of bananas 🍌

Eddie is a shining example of everything a sanctuary can achieve. Through care and compassion they CAN learn to love again. Sadly though, it’s also an example of the gravest hardship we face as their lucky guardians. No matter what we do, no matter how good our care - generations of selective breeding in the industry sentenced him to this fate the minute he was born. We can offer them everything all animals desire but cannot defeat their genetics 💔

Rosie has medicated Eddie as his condition has worsened over the last 18 months and the last gift he has given us is another full summer of his presence. The final gift we can give him is helping him out of his broken body - ending his pain, and beginning ours.

Eddie will spend his final days at the sanctuary surrounded by all those that love him before we say goodbye next week

I will miss you so much, Big Boy ❤️
