Saint Louis and Saint Zélie Martin met in a simple yet providential way. In 1858, Zélie was walking across the Saint Leonard Bridge in Alençon, France, when she passed Louis. In that moment, she felt a deep, inner conviction, later recalling, “This is the man whom I have prepared for you.”
Both had initially pursued religious vocations—Louis aspired to join a monastery, and Zélie considered becoming a nun—but health issues and other circumstances redirected their paths. Their meeting was orchestrated by God’s plan, and shortly afterward, they were formally introduced by a mutual acquaintance.
Their shared faith and trust in God’s will drew them together. Just three months later, on July 13, 1858, they were married in a midnight ceremony, vowing to build a life centered on God. Together, they raised a family rooted in holiness, giving the Church one of its most beloved saints, St. Thérèse of Lisieux. Their story is a reminder that when we place our lives in God’s hands, He creates something far greater than we could imagine 🤍
