Policy action becomes possible when harm is measured and monitored. India’s new One Health Governance Framework signals an important shift in how health risks are understood.

At Samayu, we are working to ensure that animals are not left out of this conversation. In Madhya Pradesh, we are translating the framework’s principles into governance processes — from local committees to capacity-building and policy dialogue. Because when animal suffering remains invisible, harmful systems remain unchanged.

The discussion reinforced a crucial link: human health, fish health, and environmental conditions are deeply interconnected. Unsafe practices don’t just harm fish — they can also endanger farmers and the public. Participants then took part in Samayu's training on water quality analysis using a water testing kit.

A total of five fisheries cooperative societies participated in the FGD:
- Shraddha Machhua Sahkari Samiti, Sadguan
- Eklavya Machhua Sahkari Samiti, Hatna
- Marhar Cooperative Society, Marhar
- Machhua Sahkari Samiti, Gunji Naan Pani
- Kewat Machhua Sahkari Samiti, Beldhana

Shri Surendra Kumar Kurmi, Assistant Director of Fisheries (ADF), Damoh, was also present and actively engaged during the session.

Fisherwomen from marginal communities in Balaghat revealed that caste dynamics are one of the major drivers of pond pollution, stressing water quality and fish welfare.

In response to prominent water quality concerns, Samayu conducted hands-on training covering limnological water-quality parameters, which will prove substantial in reducing fish suffering.
