How do you turn a passion for wilder landscapes into a thriving, youth-led restoration movement? 🐺🌿

To kick off GROUNDWORK, Session 1 dives straight into ecological action! We’re bringing in Giulia Testa from European Young Rewilders to break down how young practitioners are returning natural processes to European landscapes and building power across borders.

In this session, you’ll learn:
🌱 How to mobilize young people around ecosystem restoration & wild nature
🐾 Strategies to grow a dedicated community of local rewilders
⚡ How to turn collective passion into tangible, on-the-ground ecological impact

Four years ago, we started Sylvester with trial, error, and a big vision. Today, we’re launching GROUNDWORK: A 5-part online workshop series supplying your hands-on blueprint for launching youth-led environmental action. We’ve brought together expert young practitioners from across Europe to show you how to build a movement, access land, use legal tools, and get your project funded.

1 year of rewilding at Rega Grande, Galicia 📸

When we bought our first plot last September, we were right in the middle of our Sylvester week. Between the excitement and endless discussions about our rewilding strategy, most experienced rewilder we talked to told us the same thing: “Whatever you do, don’t forget to take photos.”

So we picked a few spots, marked them, and tried our hand at fixed-point photography: taking photos from the exact same position, height, angle, and camera settings year after year to track the development of the site.

Is our ex*****on perfect? Definitely not. The sun was shining brighter this year, we used a slightly different camera, and the angles are a tiny bit skewed. But as we were reminded early on: done is better than perfect.

It’s wild to see how much life is pushing back already. Our only real intervention here was peeling the eucalyptus to stop regrowth (which worked remarkably well!), and underneath, dozens of tiny trees are starting to take root.

Fai dúas findes xuntámonos na nosa primeira Asemblea da Mocidade no Rural Galego (Asilvestrados) e buf… que fantasía de días!
Xente de toda Galiza conectadísima e coa mesma paranoia: darlle vida e futuro ao noso rural. O resumo rápido de como foi o lío:
Venres: Montamos tendas, compartimos cea falando en 5 idiomas á vez e intentamos aprender os 21 nomes do grupo sen morrer no intento.
Sábado: Obradoiro de permacultura con Walter (xantar recollido por nós mesmos!), volta pola ecoaldea con Manolo, e a flipar co proxecto it’s thyme de Hanna e Julia. Pola tarde, ruta monte a través con Elena para falar de rewilding... e acabamos nunha fervenza brutal que nos soubo a gloria!
Domingo: Cero postureo, pasamos á acción. Montamos un grupo coordinador, fixemos rede da boa e acabamos movendo lousas para os tellados da aldea. Isto só acaba de empezar e cant@s máis sexamos, mellor! Se che mola a idea, queres achegarte ou simplemente cotillear máis, mándanos un DM sen cortarte

Two weekends ago we got together for our first Assembly of Youth in the Galician Countryside (Asilvestrados) and phew… what an absolute vibe!
People from all over Galicia super connected and on the same wave: bringing life and a future back to our countryside. A quick recap of how the chaos went:
Friday: We pitched tents, shared dinner speaking in 5 languages at once, and tried to learn 21 names without our brains melting.
Saturday: Permaculture workshop with Walter (eating lunch we picked ourselves!), a walk around the ecovillage with Manolo, and mind blown by the it’s thyme project with Hanna and Julia. In the afternoon, an off-trail trek with Elena to talk rewilding... and we ended up at an epic waterfall that felt amazing!
Sunday: Straight to action. We set up a coordinating group, built a solid network, and ended up hauling roof slates for the village houses. This is just getting started, and the more of us there are, the better! If you like the idea, want to jump in, or just want to stalk us a bit more, don’t be shy and send us a DM

Something bright and colourful is germinating on the horizon! 🌼 🐞🪻
We’re launching our Collaborative Intergenerational Wildflower Campaign soon and are looking for regional ambassadors to bring wildflower-powered, blooming biodiversity to your neighbourhood as well! 🐝

As a regional ambassador, you’ll work together with us and help people in your area turn ordinary lawns and green spaces into little wildflower havens for bees, butterflies and other insects.
You’ll be our local link: helping us coordinate and distribute native seeds, connecting with people in your community, and answering the occasional question along the way.

We’ll provide the seeds, information and support, you help get them into the hands (and soil 🌱) of people around you.

Haberá actividades prácticas de asilvestramento e permacultura, boas conversas, novas conexións, tempo ao aire libre e moito espazo para traer e compartir as túas propias ideas.

What happens when the eucalyptus is gone?

Before we start actively restoring our plots in Galicia, we wanted to know exactly what we’re starting with.

So this spring, we did our biodiversity snapshot: a biodiversity baseline documenting the plants, animals and fungi already making their way back onto the land. And honestly, we were pretty amazed by how much life we found. 🌿🍄🕷️🐦

Using iNaturalist, we’re creating a record that will allow us to follow the return of the fraga, Galicia’s native forest, species by species, year by year.

This is what rewilding looks like at the very beginning. 💚

Únete a unha fin de semana de acampada, natureza e aprendizaxe xunto a outras persoas mozas do rural galego.
Do 18 ao 20 de setembro, en Mañón, xuntarémonos para aprender sobre rewilding, permacultura e acción colectiva, compartir experiencias e imaxinar xuntas o futuro do rural galego.

Porque…Estás tamén ate os ***** de escoitar sempre o mesmo?
Que o rural galego é só lumes, eucaliptos e un monte abandonado sen xestión nin limpeza? E de aturar o conto de que a mocidade pasamos de todo, somos individualistas, ou pior, que tiramos cara ao facha? Pois vai sendo hora de cambiar o relato!
Desde Sylvester Rewilding pasamos á acción e estamos a preparar a Asilvestrados – Laboratorio Xuvenil de Futuros Rurais un encontrazo no medio da natureza para conectar con xente coas mesmas ideas, aprender sobre rewilding (renaturalizacion) e permacultura, auto-organizarmonos, e demostrar que hai relevo e futuro!
