Our Plan

Location
Muloma Heritage Center is working at the crossroads of culture, cuisine, sustainability, agriculture, and ecology. Helena Island in the South Carolina Lowcountry, we are creating a mindful and reverent space where all parts of the Diaspora can break bread and share ideas. Muloma honors the richness of our past and its ties to the present while protecting that legacy and its role in future innovations and evolving stories of African Atlantic culture, cuisine, and traditions. Initially, we will address a segment of the St. Helena market known for its stable, family orientation, and for its willingness to support and patronize local institutions. In addition, we will look to gain support from the Beaufort County and South Carolina community, both its residents and businesses while building partnerships with local organizations, educational institutions, and culinary schools. Once established, we will expand our focus to include the entire regional, national, and international market. Our Mission
Muloma Heritage Center strives through food and agriculture to create a unique environment in which people of all ages, ability, and experience can feel free to imagine, create, and welcome an African centered approach to food culture. This environment will appeal to a broad cross-section of all families, without regard to cultural, racial, educational, or economic background. The takeaway from a visit to Muloma Heritage Center is that the visitor will better understand the culture and contributions that emerged from Africa and her Diaspora. The focal point of the property will be three kitchens that represent the evolution of Black cooking- the Ancestral Kitchen, Heritage Kitchen, and the Legacy Kitchen. Various farms will connect the kitchens. An outdoor dining area will be located in the center of the land dedicated to educational and social programming. Each kitchen will be used as educational and practical tools for visitors. Objectives:
Culinary – Build relationships with culinary schools to work with the next generation of chefs, cooking classes, cooking demonstrations, food history, tastings

Culture – Educate on the history of the African Atlantic influences to this region

History – Archiving past and present foodways of the Diaspora

Eco-tourism – Farmstead, gardens and greenhouse

Destination – Weddings, reunions, special events

Community – Partnerships that enrich and support the local area

We are committed to making St. Helena Island an Eco-Tourism destination and promoting its culture worldwide. Products/Services
Muloma Heritage Center will provide a multitude of products and services, to include: cooking demonstration, cooking classes, tastings, exhibits, tours, educational programming, interactive hands-on activities, family and youth activities, souvenirs, special events, and lectures. Visitors to the property will be:
1. Foodies:

Food lovers can take cooking classes taught by award-winning chefs, or they can simply relax while being served traditional Black foodways and African Diasporic cuisine in the outdoor dining area, with live oak trees covered in Spanish moss in the distance.

2. History enthusiasts:

Muloma Heritage Center is proud to announce that our co-founder and chef, Adrian Lipscombe Adrian Lipscombe, has been selected as one of 50 leaders in the 2026–2027 Obama Foundation Leaders USA Program.

Adrian’s leadership embodies the heart of Muloma’s mission: preserving, practicing, and advancing African Atlantic foodways through land, culture, education, agriculture, and culinary arts. Her work reminds us that foodways are more than recipes. They are living systems of memory, knowledge, power, and possibility.

We celebrate this well-deserved recognition and look forward to the relationships, knowledge, and renewed vision Adrian will bring back to Muloma and the communities we serve.

Congratulations, Adrian. We are incredibly proud of you. Now, let’s continue the work.

Now in its fourth year, The Obama Foundation Leaders USA Program is guided by the leadership values of President and Mrs. Obama. The program draws on the Foundation’s Hope to Action curriculum to support Leaders in embracing diverse perspectives, harnessing collective power, and driving tangible progress toward a more just and sustainable world. The Leaders USA Program has a particular focus on strengthening democratic culture, and the 50 Leaders come from 29 states and territories and work across a broad range of focus areas, including democracy and civic engagement, public safety, artificial intelligence, public health, rural and economic opportunity, and arts and culture.

The Obama Foundation Leaders program is designed to inspire, empower, and connect emerging leaders from Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the United States to change their respective communities and the world. To learn more, visit obama.org/leaders.

Some seeds become gardens. Others become futures.

This fall, Muloma Heritage Center hopes to welcome 12 students into our 2nd Feast & Field cohort; our immersive educational program exploring African American, African Atlantic, and Gullah Geechee foodways through history, agriculture, ecology, culinary arts, and community.

We’re raising $20,500 to provide 12 full scholarships, ensuring that financial barriers don’t prevent passionate students from participating.

A full scholarship is $1,700, but every gift helps plant the seed for someone’s future.

Together, we can cultivate the next generation of cultural stewards through food.

If this work speaks to you, we’d be honored to have your support!

🌿 Feast & Field – Day 3 🌿
Today in the community kitchen at the .cdc, participants gathered for an Okra 3 Ways workshop with Michael Twitty (); exploring technique, history, and flavor through one of the South’s most storied ingredients.

From red rice inspired by Twitty’s ‘Recipes from the American South’ to crab soup, okra stew, cornbread, and hoe cakes, the kitchen was full of movement, learning, and teamwork. Each dish carried not just flavor, but collective stories.

We’re honored to host students from Anne Arundel Community College’s Hotel, Culinary Arts & Tourism (HCAT) Institute this week as they engage with African Atlantic foodways in real time; through hands-on practice, shared meals, and cultural exchange.

More from the field soon! 🌾
