Sometimes a visit to RSPB Loch Lomond creates unexpected moments like this one!

Last month, Thomas and Jennifer Stewart captured this image of an Osprey mobbing a White-tailed Eagle! Talk about good timing...

Volunteer's Week with RSPB 💚

This week our volunteers enjoyed a guided walk at RSPB Inversnaid with Site Manager Fraser and Assistant Warden Linden. We celebrated the successful woodland regeneration and learned about future conservation plans on this wilder reserve.🌲

The evening ended with a sunset buffet and some bird watching before the midges descended. 😁

“The impacts predicted for this site are an order of magnitude greater, and across more species than we have seen for any other offshore wind farm application in Scotland.”

These are NatureScot's words from a consultation document in 2023 about Berwick Bank wind farm.

If built, this wind farm could be the deadliest for birds anywhere in the world. It is predicted to kill more than 4000 seabirds in the first year alone including Guillemots, Kittiwakes and Puffins.

Thank you to the Woodland Trust for hosting the Glen Finglas BioBlitz last Saturday!

Our team from RSPB Loch Lomond went along to assist with some bird watching in the woods, and were excited to listen to Wood Warblers in the trees with visitors🌳

Of course we then had a go at the other activities on offer. A scarce sedge, Tall Bog Sedge was spotted in a boggy area on the grassland safari, and an impressive Poplar Hawk-Moth captured in the moth trap. With pond dipping activities on as well it was a busy day 💚

Last week at RSPB Loch Lomond our volunteers began a series of dragonfly and damselfly surveys led by ecologist Rachel Bicker. It was so exciting to see a variety of species at different stages in their life cycles🍀

The day's highlights included a Common Hawker Dragonfly nymph, an immature Azure Damselfly, an adult Four Spotted Chaser Dragonfly and a Four Spotted Chaser Dragonfly exuvia (shed skin).

The surveys are helping us understand the health of our ponds and how we can best manage them for wildlife 💚🌿
