Through incredible community collaboration, Kamikatsu has achieved an 80% recycling rate! Nestled among the mountains of Shikoku Island in Japan, this town offers travelers a chance to learn about recycling, upcycling, and repurposing waste. โ™ป๏ธ๐Ÿ’š With a recycling facility boasting over 45 categories, a local thrift shop, and zero-waste craft beers, Kamikatsu shows us that a sustainable future is possible.

Located just an hour from City, high in the Andes above , Potato Park offers a deep dive into this noble tuberโ€™s origins.

Managed by five Andean communities, Potato Park exemplifies community tourism. Some community members lead guided tours, others manage the potato bank, and others provide delicious local food.

Learn about the diversity of native potatoes and other traditional Andean crops like quinoa and corn, immersing yourself in the rich agricultural of the region. The locals are also happy to share their wisdom in weaving and medicinal plant use.

On May 30th, the locals celebrate the โ€˜International Day of the Potatoโ€™ with a grand festivity, thanking this vital crop and praying for a good production year.

Itโ€™s incredible to see how some ancient communities have maintained a harmonious relationship with nature for generations. Their way of life teaches us valuable lessons about sustainability and respect for the environment.

On this day, we can reflect on how we can learn from these communities and work towards preserving our planet. Itโ€™s a chance to express gratitude to Mother Earth for all she provides and to commit to being better stewards of her resources. Whether through conservation efforts, sustainable practices, or simply appreciating the beauty of nature, there are many ways to celebrate and honor this day.
