🌩️ WEST VIRGINIA WEATHER ALERT — SKYWARN ACTIVATION POSSIBLE 🌩️

The National Weather Service in Charleston, WV is monitoring an unsettled weather pattern that could bring multiple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across West Virginia beginning Monday and continuing through at least Wednesday night.

⚠️ WHAT TO WATCH FOR:

🌬️ Damaging wind gusts will be one of the primary threats.
🌧️ Repeated rounds of heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding, especially where storms repeatedly move over the same areas.
⛈️ Large hail and an isolated tornado are also possible, particularly on Tuesday.
📅 Monday–Wednesday: Multiple rounds of thunderstorms are expected, with the potential for additional strong storms continuing into next Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued Slight Risks for severe thunderstorms for portions of the region Monday and much of the area Tuesday, along with Slight Risks for excessive rainfall Monday through Wednesday.

Forecast confidence is medium to high that severe weather and heavy rain will occur, but there remains considerable uncertainty regarding exactly where the strongest storms will develop.

📻 AMATEUR RADIO & SKYWARN
This is an excellent opportunity for West Virginia amateur radio operators to participate in their local SKYWARN nets and provide trained weather observations to the National Weather Service.

If you are a trained SKYWARN spotter, be prepared to report significant observations such as:

🌪️ Tornadoes or funnel clouds
🌬️ Damaging winds or wind damage
🧊 Large hail
🌧️ Flash flooding or rapidly rising water
🌲 Downed trees and power lines
⛈️ Other significant storm damage

Remember: Your eyes in the field can make a difference. Accurate, timely reports from trained SKYWARN spotters help the National Weather Service better understand what is happening on the ground and can assist with warnings and public safety decisions.

📡 Monitor your local SKYWARN net, repeater, or amateur radio emergency communications system during periods of severe weather.

📡 HAVE YOU HEARD OF MESHCORE? 📡

The West Virginia State Amateur Radio Council is encouraging amateur radio operators across the Mountain State to learn about and experiment with Meshcore—a low-power, decentralized digital communications system that can help extend communications beyond traditional repeater coverage.

🔹 3 FACTS ABOUT MESHCORE
1️⃣ It creates a mesh network.
Meshcore devices can pass messages through other nodes, allowing information to travel beyond the direct range of a single station.
2️⃣ It can provide communications without relying on cellular service.
Mesh networks can operate independently of traditional cellular infrastructure, making them an interesting option for remote areas, public service activities, and emergency communications.

3️⃣ More nodes mean greater coverage.
The strength of a mesh network comes from having more stations in more locations. Every properly placed node can potentially help connect communities and operators that otherwise may have difficulty communicating.

🇺🇸 WE WANT TO KNOW WHERE MESHCORE IS IN WEST VIRGINIA!

Are you currently using Meshcore? Do you have a node operating in your area?

👇 COMMENT BELOW AND TELL US:
📍 Your city/town or general area
📡 Whether you have a Meshcore node
🔗 What areas you're currently able to reach
🚧 Where you think additional coverage is needed

Let's start building a picture of Meshcore coverage across West Virginia and encourage more amateur radio operators to get involved!

More operators + more nodes = a stronger West Virginia mesh network!

⚠️ SKYWARN WEATHER ALERT – WEST VIRGINIA ⚠️

The West Virginia State Amateur Radio Council is advising all amateur radio operators to remain weather aware this afternoon and evening as the potential exists for strong to severe thunderstorms across portions of the state.

Forecast hazards may include:

🌧️ Excessive rainfall with the potential for localized flash flooding
🌳 Downed trees and power lines from strong wind gusts
⛈️ Frequent lightning and severe thunderstorms capable of producing hazardous conditions

Now is the time to ensure your equipment is operational and be prepared to assist with real-time weather reporting if requested. Accurate reports from trained amateur radio operators can provide valuable information to the National Weather Service and local emergency management officials.

📻 All amateur radio operators are encouraged to monitor their local SKYWARN net or the Appalachia Repeater Association (ARA) system for weather updates, net activations, and reporting instructions.

Please report severe weather safely, never put yourself in harm's way, and be ready to serve when called upon.

Stay informed. Stay connected. Stay safe.

📻⛈️ Amateur Radio Operators: The Communications Backbone of SKYWARN ⛈️📻

When severe weather strikes, reliable communication becomes critical. Amateur Radio operators play a vital role in the SKYWARN program by providing dependable communications between trained weather spotters, emergency management agencies, and the National Weather Service—especially when traditional communication systems become overloaded or fail.

Licensed amateur radio operators relay real-time reports of tornadoes, damaging winds, large hail, flooding, and other hazardous weather directly from the field. Their accurate and timely reports help National Weather Service meteorologists verify radar observations and issue more precise warnings, giving communities additional time to prepare and respond.

During major weather events, amateur radio operators also support Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs), hospitals, public safety agencies, and disaster response organizations by maintaining communication networks when they are needed most. Their commitment, training, and volunteer service make them an invaluable part of protecting lives and property before, during, and after severe weather. Thank you to all the amateur radio operators who answer the call to serve! 🌪️⚡📡
