CAF Standard - The length from the top of the medal bar suspender to the bottom
edge of the medal shall be 9 cm. In rare cases where a recipient has an especially long insignia (i.e. a foreign award), expansion up to 9.5 cm will be permitted. NOTE - Members who fall under the old 10 cm policy do not have to modify their medals mounting. It should be only done by attrition/new mounting. RCMP Standard - Are the same as the new CAF standards
Things you need to know:
1) Court Mounting options are swing mount and full mount. Your Court Mounter can explain the difference and the purposes of each mount.
2) When mounting medals you must follow the regulations set our by your Countries 'Honours and Awards or Heritage sites'. All Military Organization have a set Manual that outlines the Standard for all mounting options.
3) RCMP Medals - These are unique and specific to the history and heritage of the RCMP. Your Court Mounter should be able to explain the reason for this and the reason why they deviate from the CAF Standard.
4) Cadet Medals - These are mounted at the CAF Standard however are in reverse order as they are worn on the right side and are not allowed to be mounted with CAF or RCMP medals. This is important ask your Court Mounter for more information.
5) Don't be fooled by the fly by night court mounters that watch "youtube" videos. There is a lot more to court mounting then watching a video. A few examples: Push pins lengths, glue or hot glue, tape or adhesive, standard mounting sizes based on the medal origins. ALL medals should be attached by a ....... ASK your Court Mounter. There is a big difference between trained mounters and video mounters.
6) PRICE - Mounting is unique and rare skill set. Ribbon used to mount your medals is only made in England. Local municipal medals that the City/County hands out or local Police/Fire/EMS organizations may make there own ribbon and source it locally. This can be expensive... On average the value/price is based on the material used the court mounters experience and how quickly you need your medals. Please note: The court mounting world is not fast, it can take time, however a week or two should be an acceptable wait time for your medals. Expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $30 per medal for full mounting. (subject to your living area and not including shipping if required)
Lastly - Your Court Mounter is knowledgeable and should be able to explain your medals how they should be mounted and a little history behind them. For people getting medals mounted for a shadow box or other displays your court mounter should work with you to mount them how you would like them. For example all mounted together set distances or mounted all separate for a collage display case etc. Key is don't be scared to ask.
