BIRN Kosovo continues to implement the project "Promoting Community Engagement, Public Safety, and Women's Empowerment for a Resilient Security Sector in Kosovo."

Our Embassy 🇳🇱 team visited North Mitrovica to meet with our MATRA implementing partners from BIRN Kosovo and ACDC and the Kosovo Police as part of the project "Promoting Community Engagement, Public Safety, and Women Empowerment for a Resilient Security Sector in Kosovo."
The visit focused on reviewing progress, exchanging perspectives, and reaffirming our shared commitment to strengthening trust between communities and institutions, enhancing public safety, and promoting inclusive security for all communities in the North of Kosovo.
We thank our partners and the Kosovo Police for the productive discussions and continued cooperation.

🚨 BIRN Kosovo publishes "Systematic Challenges in Addressing Occupational Safety and Health Crimes in Kosovo". 🚨


📘 The core findings of the report reveal a severe lack of institutional coordination, weaknesses in the legal framework, and systemic challenges within the justice system ⚖️ that prevent effective accountability. By tracking 37 completed court cases and 25 administrative files from the Labor Inspectorate, the project team exposed how employers routinely fail to implement legally obligated safety measures under Article 358, directly leading to frequent workplace fatalities and severe, lifelong physical injuries.

During the launch event, key speakers emphasized the urgent need for reform.
👉 Jeta Xharra, Executive Director of BIRN Kosovo, highlighted the severity of the situation and the challenge of implementing existing labor laws.
👉 Agon Dobruna, Deputy Minister of Labor, Family, and War Values, shared the ministry's commitment to creating safe workplaces, noting that they are actively drafting amendments to modernize the Labor Law and upgrade legislation for the Central Labor Inspectorate.
👉The report's authors, Kreshnik Gashi and Laurant Berisha, detailed the rigorous case-tracking process from initial inspection to final court decisions, urging faster enforcement, better coordination, better communication, and an urgent need to make workers' rights a priority.

🔍 This was followed by a panel discussion which included: Judge Burim Ademi from the Supreme Court, Prosecutor Egzon Jakupaj from the State Prosecution, Jusuf Azemi from the Independent Union of Private Sector Workers, and Kreshnik Gashi, managing editor at Kallxo.com - who discussed improving communication and handling cases more efficiently to prevent future tragedies. 🏛️

📘 BIRN Kosovo Launches Report on Countering Extremism and Terrorism in Kosovo 📘

🔍BIRN Kosovo launched its fifth and concluding monitoring report on the National Strategy for the Prevention and Combating of Terrorism (2023–2028) titled Institutional Challenges and Progress in Prevention of Terrorism in Kosovo. The report highlights key findings on the implementation of prevention mechanisms, institutional coordination, and local-level responses, while providing recommendations to strengthen early prevention efforts and build more resilient communities. 🛡️

🌐 BIRN Kosovo has also launched an educational platform designed primarily for journalists, offering accessible training at no cost. This platform includes three training modules specifically tailored to equip journalists with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate complex issues related to extremism and terrorism. 🤝

🗣️ During the launch event, speakers emphasized that preventing extremism requires stronger cooperation between institutions, municipalities, civil society, local communities, and the media, highlighting that early prevention, evidence-based policymaking, and coordinated local action are essential for building resilient and inclusive communities. 📊

Activities such as this help strengthen public awareness, promote informed dialogue, and support a collaborative approach to preventing violent extremism, ensuring that prevention efforts are sustainable, community-driven, and grounded in reliable research and practical solutions. 🌱

BIRN Kosovo Concludes Town Hall Debates on Missing Persons With Documentary Screening 📌

👥 BIRN Kosovo and ACDC concluded its documentary series on missing persons from the war and the lasting trauma this has created in Kosovo society in front of an audience at Reporting House in Prishtina. 🕊️

🫆More than two decades after the end of the war, the fate of around 170 people from Prishtina, Fushe Kosova, Obiliq, Lipjan and Gračanica remains unresolved. Behind every case are families who continue to live with the pain of loss and the hope of one day learning the truth about their loved ones.🗣️

Acting President of Kosovo Albulena Haxhiu and Acting Deputy Head of the European Union Office in Kosovo Eva Palatova emphasized the necessity of voicing the concerns of families of missing people, and initiatives such as this documentary and the discussions surrounding it serve as an important reminder that the search for truth and justice must continue! 👥👥

🏠 Who owns property in Kosovo, and who is being left behind?

📌A new report launched by BIRN Kosovo and Advocacy Training and Resource Center - ATRC for the project, with support from the World Bank’s State and Peacebuilding Fund. 📊

The report examines the structural, legal and administrative obstacles that prevent citizens from exercising their property rights equally, with a focus on women, non-majority communities and other citizens affected by unresolved inheritance procedures and informal construction. 🔍

Nearly 30% of registered property owners have died without inheritance procedures being initiated, leaving around 200,000 properties frozen outside the formal market. 📉

Women own only 21% of registered properties in Kosovo.❗️

🏗️ More than 350,000 buildings remain unlegalized, while courts continue to face tens of thousands of unresolved property disputes.

BIRN Kosovo hosted the Regional Roundtable on Digital Violence Against Women, bringing together journalists, researchers, legal experts, and civil society representatives from Kosovo and Albania to discuss prevention, accountability, and support for survivors. 📈

The speakers during this interactive roundtable noted the need for coordinated action. 👇

🗣️ Flaka Isufi presented findings on media reporting of digital violence against women, featuring cases and media reporting practices in Kosovo and Albania.

🗣️ Labinot Leposhtica and Xhorxhina Bami shared and discussed concrete cases of online targeted abuse on women and girls and the legal and ethical standards governing reporting on violence against women.

🗣️ Visar Prebreza examined how disinformation and sensationalist reporting can contribute to victim-blaming narratives.

💬 Participants during the open discussion emphasized the importance of responsible journalism, effective legal safeguards, and regional cooperation in addressing digital violence against women.

BIRN Kosovo and Advocacy Center For Democratic Culture screened a documentary on missing persons from the Ferizaj region, as part of the EU-funded project “Unveiling the Truth: Combating Monoethnic Journalism and Advocating for Missing Persons in Kosovo,” and thus featuring testimonies from families of the missing and representatives of relevant institutions, while highlighting the lasting impact of war crimes on families and communities as part of a broader series of public discussions on transitional justice and missing persons in Kosovo. 📣🕊️

The documentary was produced following more than 200 hours of interviews with family members of missing persons, witnesses, and individuals involved in the search and identification process.
