Buildings are produced, inhabited, and remembered through unequal social relations. Their meanings are therefore often contested. We invite you to stay with these contradictions and ask what they reveal about the societies that produced them.

Sistemi bankar

Publishing

Under this year's theme, Building Kosovo, the Rilindja building is one example of the layered histories we invite fellows to explore. Its story encompasses Albanian-language publishing, knowledge production, institutional repression under the Serbian regime, and ultimately the closure of one of Kosovo's most important cultural institutions for the Albanian community.

Prodhimi

Production

The former Bread Factory in Ferizaj is one of the many buildings that shaped Kosovo during the second half of the twentieth century. Under this year's theme, Building Kosovo, we invite applicants to consider how a single building can illuminate larger histories of production, ownership, labour, and economic transition.

Call for Applications: BalkanStoryMap Fellowship Programme
2026

The application period for the BalkanStoryMap Fellowship Programme will remain open until 30.06.2026.

The programme will last four months, beginning in July, and will provide mentoring and editorial support for 10 young individuals focusing on research and writing. Training, mentorship, and editorial sessions will take place in Prishtina.

This year's fellowship focuses on architecture constructed in Kosovo during the second half of the twentieth century. Participants are invited to investigate a single building.

We welcome proposals engaging with a wide range of building typologies, including schools, hospitals, factories, hotels, housing estates, cultural centres, administrative institutions, etc. Through the study of a single building, fellows are encouraged to explore its architectural expression, typology, transformation, and contemporary significance, while situating it within the broader social, political, economic, and spatial conditions that shaped its emergence.
