NDI Kosovo Working for Democracy and Making Democracy Work! www.ndi.org/kosovo

NDI is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, nongovernmental organization that has supported democratic institutions and practices in every region of the world for more than two decades. Since its founding in 1983, NDI and its local partners have worked to establish and strengthen political and civic organizations, safeguard elections, and promote citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. The programs of the National Democratic Institute in Kosovo are funded in large part by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Other Programs - With National Endowment for Democracy support, NDI is helping a multi-ethnic group of young people from the divided region of Mitrovica to reach across ethnic lines by tackling group projects to better their community.

A look back at the closing event of the 2026 , bringing together mentors and mentees from the sixth and seventh cohort, and women from across the security sector for an evening of connection and exchange.

70 women. 34 mentors. 34 mentees. 6 different sectors. Two cohorts built around leadership, learning, and connection. đź”—

From February to September 2026, the created opportunities for women across different sectors to learn from experienced leaders, reflect on their own leadership journeys, and build relationships with women working across various institutions and professional fields.

đź’­ For some, it meant gaining a new perspective on their career. For others, it meant having a mentor to turn to, meeting women facing similar challenges, or finding the confidence to take on new opportunities.

The 2026 cohorts leave with new perspectives, stronger networks, and a community of women they can continue to learn from and support.

What does it actually take to build a career in the security sector and step into leadership?

At the closing of the 2026 Leadership Mentorship Program, Colonel Taibe Canolli-Brajshori, Kosovo Police; Major Ema Streit, KFOR; and Captain Ilirianë Bunjaku, Kosovo Security Force, brought different experiences and generations of leadership into the same conversation.

Their reflections touched on career paths, responsibility, mentorship, and the importance of creating opportunities for the women who follow.

But the evening didn't end with the keynote speakers.

The evening continued with a networking session that brought together mentees and mentors with women from the Kosovo Police, Kosovo Security Force and KFOR. It created space to exchange experiences, build new connections, and strengthen the professional networks through which women can support one another.

As we mark the , we’re taking a closer look at how people in Kosovo perceive democracy 👀

NDI Kosovo's most recent Public Opinion Research found that 3 in 4 people say democracy is always preferable to any other form of government. At the same time, respondents identified corruption, economic inequality, and lack of accountability among the biggest threats to democracy.

On the final day of the GEP Summer School, 30 young people turned the week’s discussions into concrete policy proposals. 🧩
