🏛️ Following its establishment by the Government of Kosovo, MCA-Kosovo has advanced the next key step for the Energy Storage Corporation (ESCorp), its official registration with the Kosovo Business Registration Agency (ARBK).

Funded through the MCC-Kosovo Compact, ESCorp will be responsible for the long-term management of Kosovo’s Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

🔋With a planned capacity of 125 MW / 250 MWh, the BESS facilities will strengthen the flexibility and resilience of Kosovo’s energy system, contributing to a more secure and reliable electricity supply.

NEXT: ESCorp’s inaugural meeting, the start of BESS implementation, and preparations for the long-term operation and management of BESS.

A strong governance structure will help ensure that Center for Energy Skills and Innovation (CESI) remains connected to the needs of the energy sector and the labor market. ⚡

🏛️ CESI will be guided by a governance model that brings together representatives from the Universiteti i Prishtinës and employers from the energy and adjacent sectors. Through the CESI Council, strategic oversight and key decisions will help shape the direction and development of the center.

🤝 An Industry Advisory Board will further strengthen this approach by providing technical guidance on training programs, ensuring that courses are aligned with industry needs, and supporting connections between graduates and employment opportunities. 🎓

🔋The batteries are on the way!

In accordance with the applicable MCC Guidelines, through a Limited Bid method, MCA-Kosovo has received two submissions for the Design and Built of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and its Transmission Connection Infrastructure, marking the most important milestone for the MCC-Kosovo Compact.

The Battery Energy Storage System project has a total capacity of 340 MWh:
🔋250 MWh in Istog and
🔋90 MWh in Ferizaj

The Battery Energy Storage System will help enhance the flexibility and resilience of the power system, provide operating reserves, balance the grid, and support the improved integration of new energy sources.

The procurement process will now proceed with the evaluation and the subsequent steps set out in MCC rules. Following the successful completion of the procurement process, construction is planned to begin next year🏗️.

This is one of the largest investments in Kosovo’s energy sector in recent decades, and one of the biggest and most innovative energy projects in the Western Balkans.

The Kosovo Compact Program is a $236.7 million investment by the United States of America, through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), and the Government of Kosovo.

🚀 Another important milestone in operationalizing Kosovo’s Energy Storage Corporation (ESCorp).

The Government of Kosovo, within its authority vested under the applicable Law on Public Owned Enterprises, approved the ESCorp’s Charter, a key step in establishing the legal and governance framework for the country’s new publicly owned energy enterprise.

The Charter sets out ESCorp’s mandate, ownership and governance structure, decision-making responsibilities, financial oversight, transparency requirements, and core operations including owning and operating battery energy storage systems and providing balancing and other energy services.

Through the MCC-Kosovo Compact, MCA-Kosovo is supporting ESCorp’s establishment and operationalization by:

💶Providing the financial and technical resources needed to establish ESCorp;
🏛️Supporting operational expenses and procuring technical assistance to build institutional capacity; and
🔋Commissioning and overseeing the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Once the BESS facilities are designed and built, ESCorp will manage 125 MW/250 MWh of battery storage capacity, strengthening the security, flexibility, and resilience of Kosovo’s energy system.

🏛️ Center for Energy Skills and Innovation (CESI) is committed to supporting trainees beyond skills development by helping them successfully connect their training with future career opportunities in energy.

Through collaboration, CESI will provide trainees with access to career guidance, orientation sessions, and employment support services, complemented by workforce pathways, internships, and other forms of workplace-based learning (WBL) that strengthen connections between skilled workers and employers.

These efforts will help trainees:

⚡ Strengthen their job readiness, and
⚡ Better connect their newly acquired skills with opportunities in the energy sector and adjacent sectors.

🎓Designed to foster practical learning and professional development, these facilities will provide a dynamic learning environment where students, graduates, and energy professionals can build the technical skills needed to meet the evolving demands of Kosovo's energy sector.

🔋Through hands-on training and industry-aligned programs, CESI will help develop a skilled workforce equipped to support a more reliable and secure energy future for Kosovo.

🏛️ Center for Energy Skills and Innovation (CESI) will provide flexible training opportunities designed to respond to the changing needs of Kosovo’s energy sector and support different pathways for skills development.

CESI will offer:
⚡Regular training programs lasting five to six months, with 70% of training delivered in CESI classrooms and laboratories and 30% through Work-Based Learning in a partner company.
⚡Short-term training focused on reskilling and upskilling, allowing participants to choose and complete individual modules based on their specific learning needs.

By combining knowledge, practical training, and real-world industry experience, CESI will contribute to preparing a qualified workforce ready to support Kosovo’s energy future.

🏛️ A public hearing was held yesterday at the Municipal Assembly Hall of Ferizaj regarding the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report for KOSTT SH.A.’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Sojevë.

The planned 45 MW / 90 MWh system will provide Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR) services, supporting the flexibility and reliability of Kosovo’s electricity system. ⚡

Organized by KOSTT SH.A. in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning and the Municipality of Ferizaj, the hearing gave citizens and interested members of the public an opportunity to learn more about the project, ask questions, and share their views on its environmental and social impacts.

Meaningful public participation is an important part of the environmental assessment process and contributes to the informed implementation of the project.

Through continuous collaboration with employers and energy sector stakeholders, Center for Energy Skills and Innovation (CESI) will ensure that its programs respond to labor market needs and provide practical learning opportunities aligned with national and international standards.

As part of its first phase, planned to start in September 2027, CESI will be providing two priority training programs comprising of a total of 25 modules.

These programs will lay the foundation for a broader portfolio of more than 10 training programs projected.
