Sexual and reproductive health and the rights of persons with disabilities was the topic of the Peer support session, held today by DPF Finland. Contributors to this session Kenya Association of the Intellectually Handicapped (KAIH) and FDUV, Finland gave two different overviews of the past history and the current situation regarding the rights of persons with disabilities and their access to sexual and reproductive education. In Kenya, sexual and reproductive education for PWDs is still seen as a taboo subject, rooted in the cultural beliefs of communities where persons with disability are seen as incapable of being parents. However, KAIH has worked hard in raising awareness and advocating that PWDs enjoy equal rights like everyone else. In their presentations, both organizations mentioned forced sterilization being applied to prevent reproduction. This situation has already changed in Finland, UNCRPD has enabled them equal rights to make their own choices in life and the government fully supports them in family planning.
This activity was carried out within the framework of the "Inclusive Kosovo" project, supported by the European Union Office in Kosovo and implemented by HANDIKOS, Kosovo Association of the Deaf, Kosovo Association of the Blind, Kosovo Disability Forum, "Threshold" and "Disability Partnership Finland.
