Thanks to EU’s support, more than 2,300 students and 130 staff of the University of Pristina, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMNS) will soon be studying, researching, and working in newly built state of the art facilities.

The construction of these facilities is co-funded by the European Union in Kosovo (EUR 11.9 million), the University of Pristina (EUR 5 million), and the Ministry of Education and Science (EUR 1 million), and represents a significant investment in strengthening higher education in Kosovo.

EU in Kosovo Head of Cooperation, Hubert Perr, Rector of the University of Pristina, Arben Hajrullahu and Acting Minister of Education and Science, Hajrulla Çeku, visited the new Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences building, to review the progress as works enter their final stage.

Hosted by UNOPS – as the implementing partner - the visit included a presentation on the current status of works and a guided tour of the facility, showcasing the modern learning and research spaces that will serve future generations of students and academic staff.

“This EU investment will improve the infrastructure of the University of Pristina, contributing to higher quality standards in education and supporting a greater level of research-based learning and teaching”, said EU’s Perr.

Rector Hajrullahu highlighted European Union’s continued support to higher education in Kosovo, emphasizing that the new facility will significantly improve learning, teaching, and research conditions for students and academic staff.

Acting Minister Çeku noted that “with dedicated and specialized academic spaces and laboratory infrastructure, the FMNS building is an important investment in the continued development of higher education in Kosovo".

🌳Protecting trees through relocation!

As part of the ongoing landscape works at the university campus area, existing plants and selected trees are being carefully relocated within the project site.

This strategy minimizes ecological disruption by preserving mature vegetation, ensuring existing plant life remains part of the future surroundings.

The Landscape project for the Technical Faculty zone is part of the overall project for the construction of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, co-funded by the European Union in Kosovo, Universiteti i Prishtinës and Ministria e Arsimit dhe Shkencës and implemented by UNOPS.

On the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, UNOPS held a toolbox talk at the construction site to reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe and healthy workplace for everyone.

The session focused on raising awareness, reinforcing safe working practices, and reminding all workers that health and safety remain a daily priority on site. Our shared goal is that every worker returns home safely at the end of each working day.

As part of the event, we proudly presented a UNOPS Goal Zero Certificate to one worker in recognition of their dedication to promoting a strong safety culture and exemplary commitment to workplace safety.

At UNOPS, safety is everyone’s responsibility and every action counts toward achieving Goal Zero.

From field to lab - Second phase of the soil analysis workshop

Students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMNS) continued the second phase of the soil analysis workshop, this time in the lab.

Guided by Prof. Muhamet Zogaj from the Faculty of Agriculture, they prepared and tested soil samples initially collected from the landscape area of the Technical Faculty Zone, analyzing key characteristics that will inform sustainable planting solutions.

This hands-on experience not only strengthens students' practical skills, but also directly contributes to shaping the outdoor spaces they will soon use and enjoy, as they transition into the new FMNS building.

A significant step forward for environmental protection in Kosovo!

With the agreement now signed, work is officially starting on the TPP Kosovo B wastewater treatment plant. This project, funded by European Union in Kosovo and implemented by UNOPS, will first focus on the design phase before moving into full construction.

The goal is simple: to clean up the Sitnica River by stopping harmful waste from the power plant from flowing into the water. This is a major step toward a cleaner environment and healthier water for everyone.

“This important EU investment in essential infrastructure will support greener development and improve how wastewater is managed, while helping Kosovo meet key EU environmental standards,” - said EU in Kosovo, Head of Cooperation, Hubert Perr.

The ceremony brought together key institutional partners and beneficiaries, including the Ministria e Ekonomisë the Ministria e Mjedisit, Planifikimit Hapësinor dhe Infrastrukturës and the Korporata Energjetike e Kosovës Sh.a/ KEK Sh.a underscoring the importance of coordinated efforts and strong partnerships in addressing environmental challenges.

"Clean water is not a luxury, it is a right. This project brings us one step closer to ensuring that communities along the Sitnica River benefit from a healthier environment, and we are committed to delivering that change." - Sabine Kania, Head of Office, UNOPS Kosovo

On Friday, a successful workshop was held at the landscape site, bringing students from the University of Pristina closer to the practical side of engineering and environmental analysis.

Led by the Faculty of Agriculture, the session focused on in-situ soil sampling and gave students an interactive, hands-on learning experience. Students actively took part in collecting samples and discussing soil characteristics directly on site.

The next step will take place in the laboratories of the Faculty of Agriculture, where the collected samples will be further analysed to support informed on the planting and greenery of the landscape.

This workshop is another important step in linking academic learning with practical field experience.

Today, on World Engineering Day, UNOPS hosted students from the Faculty of Architecture of University of Pristina for a site visit to the new Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences building.

Aligned with this year’s theme on sustainability through smart engineering, innovation and digitalization, the visit offered students a practical look at how design moves into implementation. The group followed key stages of delivery on site, including construction sequencing, health and safety requirements, and sustainability considerations.

“Seeing the site up close helped me understand how design decisions show up on site. It was really valuable to connect what we study with the real process.” – said Jonila Muriqi, student at the Faculty of Architecture.

"At UNOPS, we are dedicated to empowering young people. We look for practical ways to do this - for example, by turning our construction site into a classroom. We want these young architects to touch, see, and feel the work, giving them the real experience they need to lead in the future." - Sabine Kania, Head of Office, UNOPS

The project for construction of FMNS is co-funded by the European Union in Kosovo, Universiteti i Prishtinës and Ministria e Arsimit dhe Shkencës and implemented by UNOPS.
