European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited today the newly constructed premises of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Pristina, co-funded by the European Union with almost €12 million and set to benefit more than 2,400 students and academic staff.

She spoke with students about their experiences in research, innovation and international academic exchange, as well as their aspirations for the future.

The new facilities provide modern spaces for learning, research and collaboration across mathematics and the natural sciences, supporting the next generation of scientists, researchers and innovators in Kosovo.

The new premises are co-funded by the European Union in Kosovo, the Universiteti i Prishtinës and the Ministria e Arsimit dhe Shkencës, with works implemented by UNOPS.

Concluding the visit, President von der Leyen, together with Prime Minister Albin Kurti and students, unveiled a plaque inaugurating the new faculty premises.

Do you know the longest river that flows completely within Kosovo?
It’s the Sitnica, flowing north through the Kosovo Plain for about 90 kilometers before joining the Ibër/Ibar River.

Rivers are vital lifelines. They provide water, support ecosystems and communities, and can contribute to food and energy security. But they can only continue to provide these benefits if we protect and care for them.

The Sitnica River is also under pressure from pollution, including wastewater from the Kosovo B Power Plant. This is now being addressed through the construction of wastewater treatment plants.

Funded by the European Union in Kosovo and implemented by UNOPS, the project will help Korporata Energjetike e Kosovës Sh.a/ KEK Sh.a reduce the amount of untreated wastewater entering the environment and contribute to improving the water quality of the river.

Cleaner water means healthier communities, healthier ecosystems and a more sustainable future. 💧🌍

Throughout the design and construction, the new Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMNS) building has served as an open space for young people to learn, explore and connect their studies with practice.

Through site visits, practical demonstrations, research work and hands-on activities, students have had the opportunity to engage directly with the project and learn more about the design and construction process. These experiences have helped bring learning beyond the classroom and closer to real life practice.

This International Youth Day, under the theme “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” we celebrate young people’s curiosity, participation and potential and the importance of creating spaces where they can put knowledge into practice.

At UNOPS, engaging young people is part of how we work, where young voices and perspectives are helping shape practical solutions for a more sustainable and inclusive future.

We are proud to deliver this project with the support of the European Union in Kosovo, Universiteti i Prishtinës and Ministria e Arsimit dhe Shkencës, creating opportunities for youth and investing in education for generations to come.

On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week, UNOPS is preparing the dedicated breastfeeding and lactation room in the new premises of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Designed as a private, comfortable and welcoming space, the room will support students, staff members and visitors who are breastfeeding, helping them participate fully in academic and professional life.

The inclusion of this space reflects our commitment to creating an accessible and inclusive environment that responds to the diverse needs of the FMNS community.
Small but meaningful facilities such as this can make a real difference in ensuring that mothers feel supported, respected and included.

This week, partners met for the first Project Steering Committee meeting of the project “Improving Water Quality of the Sitnica River through the Construction of Wastewater Treatment Plants at TPP Kosovo B.”

The Representatives from the European Union in Kosovo, the Ministria e Ekonomisë, the Ministria e Mjedisit, Planifikimit Hapësinor dhe Infrastrukturës, the Korporata Energjetike e Kosovës Sh.a/ KEK Sh.a and UNOPS came together to review progress, discuss key challenges and agree on the next steps.

The discussions focused on project progress, key challenges and the next steps to move the project forward through close cooperation among all partners.

Funded by the European Union and implemented by UNOPS, the project will support improved wastewater management at TPP Kosovo B and contribute to reducing pollution in the Sitnica River.

We appreciate the strong engagement of everyone involved and look forward to continuing this joint effort towards a cleaner and healthier environment.

International Day of Women in Engineering!

Behind every infrastructure project are people working across many roles to make it possible.

For the construction of the new Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Pristina, women are contributing across different areas that are essential to the project’s delivery and future use. From strategic leadership and professional engineering input, to procurement support for functionalization, project coordination and community engagement.

On International Women in Engineering Day, UNOPS recognizes these contributions and the important role women play in delivering infrastructure that supports education, sustainability, promotes accessibility and gender equality, and community benefit.

Engineering impact is the result of working together to turn plans into spaces that serve people.

Thanks to EU’s support, more than 2,300 students and 130 staff of the University of Pristina, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMNS) will soon be studying, researching, and working in newly built state of the art facilities.

The construction of these facilities is co-funded by the European Union in Kosovo (EUR 11.9 million), the University of Pristina (EUR 5 million), and the Ministry of Education and Science (EUR 1 million), and represents a significant investment in strengthening higher education in Kosovo.

EU in Kosovo Head of Cooperation, Hubert Perr, Rector of the University of Pristina, Arben Hajrullahu and Acting Minister of Education and Science, Hajrulla Çeku, visited the new Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences building, to review the progress as works enter their final stage.

Hosted by UNOPS – as the implementing partner - the visit included a presentation on the current status of works and a guided tour of the facility, showcasing the modern learning and research spaces that will serve future generations of students and academic staff.

“This EU investment will improve the infrastructure of the University of Pristina, contributing to higher quality standards in education and supporting a greater level of research-based learning and teaching”, said EU’s Perr.

Rector Hajrullahu highlighted European Union’s continued support to higher education in Kosovo, emphasizing that the new facility will significantly improve learning, teaching, and research conditions for students and academic staff.

Acting Minister Çeku noted that “with dedicated and specialized academic spaces and laboratory infrastructure, the FMNS building is an important investment in the continued development of higher education in Kosovo".

🌳Protecting trees through relocation!

As part of the ongoing landscape works at the university campus area, existing plants and selected trees are being carefully relocated within the project site.

This strategy minimizes ecological disruption by preserving mature vegetation, ensuring existing plant life remains part of the future surroundings.

The Landscape project for the Technical Faculty zone is part of the overall project for the construction of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, co-funded by the European Union in Kosovo, Universiteti i Prishtinës and Ministria e Arsimit dhe Shkencës and implemented by UNOPS.
