The hydrography of water flows of Kosovo is split into four river basins: the Drini i Bardhë, Ibri, Morava e Binçës and Lepenci. The Drini i Bardhë river has the greatest length in kilometres within the territory of Kosovo with 122 km1, Drini i Bardhë springs in Radavc, near the town of Pejë, and passes near smaller towns of Istog, Klinë, near Gjakovë and Prizren, but it also collects waters from
the municipalities of Malishevë, Suharekë, Skenderaj, Dragash, Shtime, Junik, Deçan etc. Over this journey, it is joined by other rivers, among which the most important are Klinë River, Istog River, Mirushë River, Lumëbardhi i Pejës, Lumëbardhi i Prizrenit, Lumëbardhi i Deçanit, Ereniku etc. A population of around 500 thousand people lives in the region of Pejë, Gjakovë, Prizren and Mitrovicë. Drini i Bardhë and other rivers that pour in it, play an important role in the life of this population, in terms of economic development, agriculture and welfare. The drift of these rivers presents potentials for development of agriculture, hydro-energy, tourism, sports and other capacities. However, along with their usage, many phenomena that damage these rivers pollute the environment and devastate their flora and fauna are also present. Uncontrolled utilization of passives (sand) in the riverbed, constant pollution from sewage and waste disposal, erosion, are some of the problems that appear and impact on frequent floods, lead to lack of drinking water, contamination of flowing water, lack of fish, damaging of agricultural products, as well as contamination of agricultural land along the stream of rivers. Activities that will be organized in the framework of Drini Day
aim to create of a broad network of active stakeholders in all governmental, governmental and society sectors. These activities will be organized by seven nongovernmental organizations, under the coordination of Syri i Vizionit, and in cooperation with several municipalities and three universities. These activities will involve municipal officials from ten (10) Kosovo municipalities, artists and sportsmen, scientists, environmentalists, school students and community members in the areas along the river stream with aim to create a broad network of environment protection and preservation activists, but also to impact on local institutions responsible of drafting adequate policies and legislation.
