Happy National Environment Week 🌊🩵

Our society was fortunate to be invited by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to host an information booth alongside other organisations and ministries working within the environmental space.

This gave us the opportunity to share more about our Guardians Program under the theme: “Puipui lou Siosiomaga, Tausi lou Faasinomaga” as well as the work of the Aiga Folau o Samoa in ocean protection and stewardship through traditional voyaging.

It is always a privilege to stand alongside so many dedicated stewards across Samoa who share the same purpose of caring for and protecting our environment.

May we continue to protect and care for our environment, recognising that it is deeply connected to our wellbeing, identity, and future.

It’s been wonderful to see many of you during our Guardians Programme in Asau and we look forward to connecting again on Gaualofa as our floating classroom continues with our journey and mission. Thank you to all that have contributed to the success of Samoa Voyaging Society!

As ocean stewards we are raising awareness and sharing information about concerning Deep Sea Mining (DSM) activities that are progressing in American Samoa. Though there is an imaginary border between our Samoan Islands, anything that is done in American Samoa’s 🇦🇸 surrounding waters will be felt in the ocean around all of Samoa 🇼🇸.

This August 2026, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), a U.S. federal agency, is proceeding with leases to several companies for DSM exploration within American Samoa ’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), despite the great opposition expressed by the people of American Samoa.

For any of our followers that meet these criteria:

🔘Family ties to American Samoa
🔘American Samoan living off-island
🔘Former resident of American Samoa

We ask that if you are against DSM in the Pacific, please read, sign and share the attached document that has been compiled by our brothers and sisters across the dateline in American Samoa. Any harm caused by DSM in American Samoa will be felt by Samoa and our Pacific family 🌏.

Guardians has officially launched in Asau, Savai‘i 📍

We are deeply grateful to Blue Nature Alliance for their generous support in making it possible for us to bring this work into communities and empowering the next generation of leaders.

Guardians is an environmental literacy program grounded in hands-on, immersive learning beyond the classroom. Through this program, young people in Samoa are equipped to care for their environment while encouraging connection in their identity and traditions. Using the vaa as a space for holistic development, the program connects cultural knowledge with environmental stewardship in meaningful and practical ways.

This site is delivered in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Conservation International. We sincerely thank our partners, and our Aiga Folau community for their ongoing support and collaboration.

Gaualofa arrived safely in Asau, Savai'i yesterday afternoon!

Aiga folau o Samoa (Samoa Voyaging Society) is in Asau to connect with community and build relationships while learning more about how we can protect our beautiful island home. Our Guardians Program is proudly funded by Blue Nature Alliance.

The Guardians Program is an Environmental Educations programme, to foster community action in caring and protecting of our ocean and environment 🌊 🌳 🍃

We are excited for the week ahead with the village of Asau!
