🆕 This edition features a historic mission to a remote Pacific community, and a profile of Asi Halaleva-Pasilio, Director of the Tokelau Meteorological Service, who put it simply: "Being part of the Pacific Met Community, and working closely with people who genuinely love their work and how it contributes to saving the lives of our people is the best part of this job."

🔎 We also cover the new COSPPac website - a single destination for Pacific climate and ocean data, the PIMS review workshop in Honiara where Pacific leaders are charting the next decade of meteorological services, and a growing partnership between SPREP and the Pacific Aviation Safety Office to keep Pacific skies safer.

‼️ And if you are a Pacific journalist with a story to tell about weather and climate , there is an opportunity in this edition with your name on it. Applications close 19 June.

Positive impacts with SPREP and Partners 🤝🌊

Looking back on positive impacts being made in May – the Young Pacific Negotiators United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) brought together emerging Pacific leaders to gain fundamental knowledge of the Convention and develop negotiation skills to enhance engagement in the negotiations process.

Through practical activities and scenario simulations of COP proceedings, participants gained insight into the negotiations process and enabled them to develop and test their negotiations skills. The simulations were facilitated by former and current Pacific negotiators, employing a ‘Pacific empowering Pacific’ approach and drawing upon years of Pacific expertise in the negotiations space.

Through funding support from the United Kingdom International Development for the UK Government and organised by SPREP with the Youth Negotiators Academy, the training allowed for genuine interactive engagement, and respect in recognising the experiences from the young Pacific professionals playing lead roles themselves within their countries.

📣🌏We amplify Pacific voices on their experiences with the training.

Excitement is building as the countdown to the inaugural Pacific Innovation Forum on Climate and Environment (PIFCE) continues.

From 1–3 July 2026, Port Vila Vanuatu will become the hub of climate and environment innovation, igniting a wave of action for climate resilience in the Pacific region, and around the world.

More than 300 government officials, entrepreneurs, non-governmental organisations, civil society groups, private sector leaders, and academic institutions from across the Pacific are expected to come together as active drivers of change in addressing global climate and environmental challenges.

“Vanuatu looks forward to welcoming everyone to Port Vila,” said Hon. Ralph Regenvanu, Minister of Climate Change Vanuatu.
“I know that the Government and the people of Vanuatu are spearheading some of the best innovations in climate and environmental solutions across the region and around the world and we would like to share these with the world and have them showcased at this event.”

This week at the GEF Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, SPREP is engaging with Pacific Political and Operational Focal Points from the Cook Islands, Fiji, the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Tuvalu.

These discussions are supporting Pacific priorities for the close of the GEF-8 cycle and preparations for GEF-9, building on SPREP’s ongoing advisory and technical support to Operational Focal Points in portfolio oversight, project supervision and access to climate and environmental finance; in addition to serving as an executing agency across several GEF investments.

On Monday, SPREP delegation led by Deputy Director General Easter Chu-Shing also joined Pacific delegates in celebrating Samoa’s 64th Independence Day, hosted by the Samoan delegation to the GEF Assembly.

SPREP held a fruitful bilateral discussion with the GEF Secretariat on the margins of the GEF Assembly and associated meetings, joined by key bilateral partners Australia (also serving as Council Co-Chair) and New Zealand, to discuss areas of joint interest including the expansion of GEF Agencies and how best to ensure Pacific SIDS and LDCs are effectively served.

El Niño is on its way to the Pacific and the science is clear.

The Meteorological Organization has issued its May 2026 El Niño/La Niña Update, and the Pacific Regional Climate Centre is urging communities across the region to take note. Forecasters now place an 80% probability on El Niño conditions developing during June–August 2026, rising to around 90% through the rest of the year.

For Pacific Island communities, this matters. El Niño shifts rainfall patterns, increases drought risk, affects tropical cyclone behaviour, and changes the ocean conditions that fishers and coastal communities depend on.

Dr. Simon McGree, Chair of the Pacific RCC Management Committee, is reminding people that a regional forecast is just the starting point: "Climate impacts play out differently across Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia. We strongly encourage communities, local leaders, and planners to reach out to their National Meteorological and Hydrological Services for guidance specific to their location."
