Team was busy this morning at Anamburu, Port Vila. We collected three bags of plastic rubbish from a small area. This brings our total to 90 kgs of rubbish removed from our streets and beaches!

Toothbrush, old shower head, and ice block plastics…

Team Plogging Vanuatu has been a bit busy over the past few weeks exploring different areas around Port Vila and other communities on Efate.

Before our recent pliking adventures (picking up litter while biking), we did a beach cleanup at Tokyo Settlement, near Le Lagon Resort, also known as the beach by Erakor Island wharf and jetty.

While most of the Tokyo Settlement area was tidy and clean, the beach itself was sadly full of rubbish, especially waste buried in and around the sand. One of the most worrying sights was finding a toothbrush and an old shower head on the beach. How do these things end up in the ocean? This is the sad reality of plastic waste. It always finds its way to the sea. We did have a small laugh wondering how that toothbrush might have travelled all the way there 😁 but the issue itself is serious.

Another nasty item we keep seeing everywhere is the small plastic wrappers from ice blocks. They are everywhere. Please, someone do something about this. We really need simple alternatives or better solutions like the one shown in the picture.

One more concern: while the community area was relatively clean, the tourist bus and car parking area near the water was very dirty. This is heartbreaking. How do bus or taxi drivers sit there and wait for tourists in the pile of rubbish?

Let us all take responsibility and protect our beautiful islands. Small actions matter.

Here’s our first plog of 2026, and it was a big one for several reasons.

Where?📍 Erakor Village - just down the road from the Community Hall and Church.

First, we collected our biggest amount of rubbish so far from a small area. We managed to collect more than 20 kg of plastic, bottles and other waste. This brings our total to 50 kg of rubbish removed from our streets and beaches. 💪♻️

Second, we tried sorting the waste following the Port Vila City Council initiative, separating items as best as we could.

But maybe the most important moment for us was seeing local people, including children, showing interest in what we were doing and even joining us. 🙏 This is exactly what we hoped for when we started this journey a few months ago, involving the local community.

We were also encouraged by a very kind shopkeeper lady in the area who promised to contact us so we can do a joint cleanup together. We cannot wait!

Finally, and most importantly, we dropped off many of the bottles we collected at the Seaside Compost Hub, which we also added as a location on Google Maps to make it easier for others to find.
