So many people have written beautiful stories about Dan McGarry and the many ways he touched people’s lives and how he touched Vanuatu itself. He was without doubt a very special guy. A man who told truth to power and suffered for it, as Howard Aru says in his Daily Post article. He was brave, extremely talented and very kind. We will always remember him.

Wan Smolbag had a special relationship with him, as a photographer of our plays, and boy, was he a good one! (Google Dan McGarry Imagicity and see the his wonderful photos of Vanuatu) And also as an actor. He had started out as an actor in Canada. That meant we talked a lot about theatre and the plays we loved. Dan even took the time to act for us; he played a reviewer in series 8 of Love Patrol. You can see series 8 on the Wan Smolbag You Tube channel. He is really worth watching! He was very easy to work with too, never playing the bigman who had acted on much bigger stages than Wan Smolbag’s.

Peter Walker continues, as I have said on another post, Wan Smolbag Theatre is so grateful to Dan for the archive we have of his photos of our productions over the years. It was a ritual that he come either to an early preview or a dress rehearsal and snap his way through the piece. With wonderful results. I never understood how he could take in so much of the play whilst constantly taking photos but he would say very sensible things about it afterwards. And then he would come back a second time with Georgaline and when it was a suitable piece, the girls. As a former theater person himself, he also wrote some very lovely very generous reviews of what he had seen in the paper; I recall on one occasion he compared one of the actors to ‘Marlon Brando in his youth.’

... For International Women's Day, WSBs Sports department and the "Hook for Health" Hockey Team brought together 65 women from 8 communities for a Hockey sports day to celebrate International Women's Day. The sports staff wanted to strengthen, promote and impower mamas in the community to "give to gain". Gloria Lango WSBs senior finance manager, a successful business women and sports enthusiast, gave a speech to encourage the women for reach for their goals. She spoke about the importance of a mother’s role in the house and supporting their families by doing business. All the mamas were impowered through sport and all enjoyed the hockey games.
