In northern Pentecost, the Vanuatu Red Cross Society, alongside the French Red Cross, is supporting communities affected by ashfall from Manaro Voui by assessing water sources and strengthening local WASH knowledge and skills.

The Vanuatu Red Cross Society joined Pacific Red Cross partners at Pacific Pre-COP31 in Fiji, with Secretary General Dickinson Tevi contributing to discussions on Non-Economic Loss and Damage.

The conversation highlighted the importance of putting communities, culture, identity and lived experiences at the centre of climate action.

𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒, 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐒

Preparing communities before a disaster can help reduce risks and protect lives. As part of the Vanuatu Red Cross Inclusive Locally Led Anticipatory Action Project, funded by the Asia-Pacific Humanitarian Fund (APHF), the Vanuatu Red Cross Society (VRCS) carried out shelter preparedness activities in Tafea, Tanna, during 14–18 July 2026.

As part of the activity, 10 VRCS volunteers participated in a Shelter Refresher Training, covering safe shelter awareness, shelter strengthening techniques, cyclone preparedness, household assessment and Kobo data collection. The volunteers also took part in Community Engagement and Accountability (CEA) training, strengthening their skills in communication, community engagement, feedback and accountability.

Following the training, VRCS volunteers engaged with four target communities to understand their shelter needs, identify vulnerabilities and conduct household assessments, including identifying vulnerable households that may require additional support.

The activity also brought together community representatives, local authorities and humanitarian partners to strengthen coordination and support community preparedness.

The information collected will contribute to Anticipatory Action planning and preparedness, helping communities take early action and strengthen their ability to prepare for future disasters.

𝐁𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐘. 𝐒𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐀 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄.

Emergencies can happen anytime, and having the right First Aid skills can make a difference when it matters most.

From 21–24 September 2026, the Vanuatu Red Cross Society (VRCS) First Aid Programme conducted a four-day Commercial Comprehensive First Aid Training for Vanuatu Australia Infrastructure for Development (VAI4D) at the VRCS Conference Room in Port Vila.

A total of 11 participants took part in the training, building their knowledge, practical skills and confidence to respond to injuries, illnesses and emergencies in the workplace and community.

Participants learned and practised essential First Aid skills, including CPR and AED use, choking, bleeding and shock, burns, fractures and other injuries, medical emergencies, poisoning and environmental emergencies, along with practical emergency scenarios and assessments.

We are pleased to share that all 11 participants successfully completed the training and were certified as First Aiders.

VRCS is committed to helping workplaces, businesses, organisations and communities strengthen their First Aid preparedness and develop the skills needed to respond when emergencies happen.

🌦️ 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐘, 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎𝐆𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑

Last week, the Vanuatu Red Cross Society (VRCS) engaged with communities in Teouma Valley, Efate, under the Vanuatu Red Cross Inclusive Locally Led Anticipatory Action Project, funded by Asia and the Pacific Humanitarian Fund (APHF).

VRCS volunteers and Teouma Valley Community Disaster and Climate Change Committee (CDCCC) members first received a briefing on the project, including its objectives, planned activities and their roles in supporting community engagement.

The team then worked with communities to:

👂 Listen to community concerns and feedback
🏠 Identify vulnerable households
💰 Raise awareness about anticipatory cash assistance
🌦️ Strengthen cyclone preparedness

A community communication platform was also established to support ongoing information sharing and engagement. The VRCS Hotline provides an additional channel for community members to ask questions, share feedback and raise concerns.

Anticipatory Action means acting before a cyclone strikes, helping communities prepare early, protect their households and reduce potential impacts.

Together, we are taking action early to build stronger and more resilient communities.

Lives have been lost, families are grieving, and many are facing an incredibly difficult time. We also acknowledge the survivors and affected families who, despite their own loss and pain, are coming together to support one another and those who have lost loved ones.

In response to this tragedy, the Vanuatu Red Cross Society is coordinating public donations to support the affected families and communities.
