Melanesian Women Today Melanesian Women Today: The voice of women and girls in Melanesia, the South Pacific, and beyond.
(1)

Melanesian Women Today (MWT) is an Indigenous-led organization that is steadfast in its commitment to empowering Pacific Islander women and girls, placing them at the forefront of leadership, research, and community transformation across Melanesia. We are dedicated to driving lasting, impactful change through evidence-based research and innovative initiatives that advance education, health, entrep

reneurship, and climate action. The escalating effects of climate change are particularly devastating to women and girls in Melanesia, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities. To address these challenges, we must empower women to take leadership roles in crafting solutions that are grounded in their cultural traditions and ensure the long-term resilience of their communities. MISSION:
Our mission is clear: we empower the next generation of women leaders across Melanesia to transform their communities through education, health, entrepreneurship, and climate action while preserving and honoring their cultural values and traditions. VISION: A resilient and thriving Melanesia where every woman, girl, and child is empowered to lead a productive, healthy, and fulfilling life, grounded in their cultural values and traditions, driving transformative change across their communities. https://twitter.com/MelanesianWomen

✊️On World Refugee Day, observed every year on June 20, we, West Papuan Women, call on the solidarity of all our friends and allies for the people who have been forced to flee their homes in Papua and who continue to bear the impact of armed conflict and military operations.

πŸ‘‰ Thousands of families have been forced to leave behind their homes, livelihoods, schools, churches, and ancestral lands in search of safety and protection. Displacement is not a choice. Every person has the right to live in peace, security, and dignity.

Internally displaced persons need humanitarian assistance, protection, access to education and healthcare services, and opportunities to return home safely and voluntarily.

🀲 On this World Refugee Day, we honor the resilience of communities that have been forcibly displaced throughout Papua. We recognize their courage, acknowledge their suffering, and reaffirm the importance of protecting human rights and upholding humanitarian principles.

πŸ“£ We call on all parties to prioritize the safety of civilians, ensure humanitarian access, and work toward peaceful solutions that will enable displaced families to return home with dignity.

Let us take heed and be reminded.

"If we fail to manage our independence wisely, colonizers may return in the form of investors.” β€” Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe

The quote reflects a broader argument that political independence alone is not enough without economic strength. Sustainable development, local industry, and economic self-reliance are often seen as essential for preserving sovereignty and ensuring communities shape their own future.
