Yesterday, a dog was brought to us with multiple severe bush knife wounds across its back and face. The injuries were extensive and shocking in their brutality.
It took more than two hours to treat this dog. The team had to carefully clip the fur, clean and assess each wound, and place numerous sutures. The dog also required IV fluids, pain relief and antibiotics to give it the best chance of recovery. One wound was so deep that it cut through the bone in the shoulder.
Cases like this are heartbreaking. The level of cruelty involved is difficult to comprehend, but unfortunately these are the animals that rely on Sam's Animal Welfare and the AVA Animal Welfare for help.
Treating a single emergency case like this consumes a significant amount of time, medical supplies and money. Even with Dr Karin O'Connor and Lydia donating their time, there are still considerable costs involved.
Every hour spent treating preventable cruelty cases is an hour that cannot be spent on desexing programs, reducing stray animal populations, and preventing unwanted puppies and kittens — the core work of both Sam's Animal Welfare and AVA Animal Welfare.
Without organisations like ours, many of these animals would simply be left to suffer. But continuing this work depends on community support.
